Does the app need to be finger food or can you do something that needs to be eaten with a fork? I had mini-lasagnas at a party last year and it was amazing. I think the host made them in a cupcake tin. Like this: quick-dish.tablespoon.com/2011/03/31/lasagna-cupcakes/
As far as dessert goes, you want something that's not too heavy, right? I'd go with a fruit cobbler - maybe mixed berries?
I did baked brie last time, and a fruit crisp, LOL. We are on the same wavelength. :-)
Tarheels, most people will eat dinner before coming so I'm always hesitant about things that are too dinner-y because I don't want a ton of leftovers. That sounds yummy to me though, I always have room for soup and bread.
i actually loved this easy one i made as part of all our apps on NYE:
flatbread crackers with prosciutto, gouda, thin sliced red onions and a drizzle of honey. you really just layer the crackers with what is listed, in the order listed. so yummy! so very easy!
