we had our anatomy scan yesterday and were thrilled to find out we are having a girl. she was a proper lady and wasn't readily giving up the goods. she happened to be breech, so the u/s tech did an internal u/s to confirm her suspicion that the baby is a girl.
it was nice to hear confirmation that the down syndrome blood test (reputed to not be tremondously accurate) that came back normal was right, too. no signs in any of the measurements that indicate down syndrome. b/c of my advances age (for a mother), this is an increased risk. yay!
i truly would have been happy either way, but am so very pleased to have a little girl coming our way. we are about half way thru this now. this information will be very helpful in our final months' preparations. it is also helpful b/c we were all set w/a girl's name when we had our son. so, we haven't really entertained much otherwise for girl names with this pregnancy.
Congrats! I hate the words "Advanced maternal age"! My grandma had twelve kids and the last one was definitely in her 40s. Dang doctor's here just like to scare the crap out of us.
Yay congrats! Girls are so much fun. Do I dare ask what is considered "advanced age?"
Usually 35+
i had my son at 38 (he was preemie, so i was supposed to be 39). and i will be 42 (march birthday for me, baby due in june) when i have this little girl. although mrs.j is right that 35+ is when they start to classify you that way, statistically, things don't change as much until 40 for down syndrome and the like, even then not as dramatically to scare us off. before embarking on IF treatments my RE required that we have counseling with a maternal fetal medicine, MFM specialist.
