Check craigslist. People give them away for free. Or check with various moving companies - a lot of them will keep their unpacked used boxes for reuse and will sometimes sell those at a discount.

I saved boxes and asked CWs. Never found any on freecycle or craigslist. I ended up buying a bunch at Uhaul. They're a pretty good deal and they'll buy back the ones you don't use. You always need more boxes! They also sell newspaper w/o print on it, which is really nice for wrapping things (w/o getting black newsprint on everything).
Oh, yeah, work is good to if you work in an office. We packed a lot of our stuff in those boxes that copy paper comes in. We go through tons of those at work, and they are the perfect size. Big enough for a good amount of stuff; small enough that they aren't too heavy when packed full.

This is what we have done too...along with hitting up the liquor/grocery stores.
Honestly, I hate the idea of using moving boxes belonging to strangers. It's kind of funny, since I am not particularly fussy or germaphobe-ish in other ways, but the idea of using freecycle or CL boxes kind of creeps me out.

Call Barnes & Noble! Some of the best boxes we used to move were from B&N. I had a lot of heavy stuff so I didn't want huge ones and the Kindle boxes were a good size. (Helped that they were prepping for BF when I was getting boxes!)
Home Depot has some square ones that were good, but I didn't buy them, I got them. I would definitely check freecycle or maybe a local buy, sell, trade group on FB if you have them.
Home Depot is usually the cheapest if you are going to buy them, they will take back unused ones too. Also look on Craigslist and post on local boards too.
Don't buy them. You can get clean boxes from clothing stores. Just have to ask for them. I work PT at a clothing store so I got them easily but I can't imagine anyone saying no to giving those boxes away.
My garage- I've got a ton of boxes and bubble wrap from moving over the summer. (Seriously, it's unlikely, but if you're in NoVA, they're all yours).
We got some boxes from Home Depot, some grabbed from work when office supplies came in, and a few others that my parents had from moving (which we had used on a previous move as well, and they had also used previously- those boxes got around!).
Since we were moving locally, we also used rubbermaid bins for a lot of stuff, unpacking them at the new house right away and then taking them back for more stuff.
I got about 100 Lowe's boxes - all sizes - and bubble wrap on Craigslist for $25. Perfect condition. After I move, I'll be giving them away for free, also on CL.

this was what i was going to mention, too. i can always get boxes (copy paper, etc.) from work over a period of time. i always do that and try grocery stores and liquor stores, as was also mentioned, too.
