What are your thoughts on mixing finishes in one room? I've seen it done in blogs (i.e. kitchen with ORB drawer pulls and nickel/chrome faucet and/or lights). Do you think it looks okay? Or do you prefer everything to match?
We mix it it up, and honestly, no one seems to notice. I find it more interesting, with a more collected over time feel. I think as long as the cabinet door, drawer and hinge hardware matches, it doesn't really matter if it the same finish as the faucets and lights.
Sometimes everything matching and bought all at once feels a bit contrived to me, but it depends on how matchy everything is and the style/age/etc. of the space too.
Too many variables to be a one finish fits all answer from me.lol
I think mix and match is pretty common just due to partial fixes, a bit of updating here and there etc. I'd say most people have mix and match. My mom has brass (don't judge..it actually looks good in her old house!) with ORB faucets and it looks great! Mine is all the same, but it's new construction too..it just happened to be a package deal.
We did in our house. Many rooms a mix of black hardware and brushed nickel. I really like it. We have mostly black/ORB lights and all of our door hinges and knobs are brushed nickel. ETA: we just built and wanted it this way. I thought at first to match, but honestly, no one notices so we just went with what we liked best.

I don't mix much because I prefer ORB, but I can appreciate it when its done. I stayed in a gorgeous rental home in Florida for a girls weekend, and the powder room was all mixed metals. It was gorgeous. Chrome faucet, brass sconces, and a silver and gold wallpaper. It sounds awful, but it was beautifully done.
I don't mix chrome and brushed nickel in the same room, and I don't mix brass with chrome or brushed nickel in the same room, but I am open to other combinations. I think chrome or brushed nickel can mix just fine with ORB, and even brass and ORB (though I really don't like brass and would try to get rid of it altogether). I do try to keep door knobs the same on each floor of the house, like we have brushed nickel in the basement and upstairs, and ORB on the main floor. I guess I have just come up with random rules that work for me!
I have a mixture of ORB and antique brass in most rooms, but then polished nickel in the bathroom. I love the mixture. I'm thinking about getting really crazy in the kitchen and doing polished nickel on the cabinets and ORB light fixtures.
