They like it dark and 'moody'! I was pleasantly surprised that today's post wasn't near as long, wordy and rambling as they typically are. Maybe they are working on that.
It's a little chilly and needs some character. But I don't mind it. considering how little they spent, I think they got a lot of bang for their buck with that makeover.
I actually don't mind the gray walls and ceiling, but I think the rest of it looks pretty uninspired.
I like that they wanted to keep the budget low, but I think they could have put a little more effort into making it look like it was something other than a room made up of leftover stuff. It just looks like a room that they didn't spend much thought on to me.
I'm not seeing dark or cavelike? It looks nice, I know everyone is tired of grey but its a nice grey, and you know they will "pop" of color as they go along.
I don't know, when I think sunroom, I just think bright and happy. It's so gray, like the rest of the living space. Maybe it's the ceiling that's bothering me...?
It doesn't look cavelike or dark to me. It does look a little like a prison if you look at that gray brick too long. But, overall, not their worst project

I like the gray, but I would probably like color just as well. I think everything else would still look drab and dull even with another color on the walls though....it's just not done well.

Sorry, guys, I just don't see what can be good at all about that room. Is this not a completely depressing picture?
And I have to go off on an Expedit rant. Can you be more original, YHL? Great, now you have joined the legions of bloggers who have an Expedit unit. It is one of the single most overdone IKEA objects, and you are late to be buying one. And you have now added on to the IKEA count in your house. STOP BUYING IKEA. In my opinion, YHL, you need to grow up. Maybe you are appealing to your readership demographic, but this is not your first home. Invest in some pieces, and stop saying you are going to be investing money in other spaces. Those "other spaces" that you have already completed do not look like you have invested money wisely.
I am *really* finally over YHL. I do not look to them for inspiration at all, any more.
For me, this is another "wow this is horrible" sunroom, much like that awful stenciling in their last sunroom.

I guess they remind me of someone my H and I would be friends with and if I walked into a friend's home and saw this, I'd like it. I don't think it's depressing. I figure if it's a sunroom, there is prob a lot of sun coming in and that's not easily captured in the pics. I don't really expect a lot from them.
I also have and like the Expedit (and love Ikea), so maybe that's why I like it.
YHL, I can take or leave, but IKEA I staunchly support.
Does it help if I say I have an IKEA kitchen? But in the world of design blog, that Expedit is WAY, WAY overused. And many here on this board have also commented on how awful that damn IKEA flower light (chandelier?) in the master bedroom is.
IKEA has its uses, but I firmly believe the Expedit is a crutch that far too many fall back on, especially in the amateur design blog world.

:Y: yes HB, it does help that you have an IKEA kitchen. I don't disagree that blogging about expedit isn't innovative. Let's just not blame expedit...it's a victim of its own success.
So what is wrong with the expedit? I want one. I wish we had a closer ikea.
Signed, soon to be on my second home, still own mostly ikea, target, etc furniture. But I don't have a blog!
Actually I agree that the room is blah. I just want to know about the expedit hate.
It is simply way overdone. It seems to be everywhere! I'd say 80% of all nurseries featured on ApartmentTherapy have an expedit in it, along with a white Hemnes dresser.
Is that rug staying? I feel like it doesn't go with the rest of it at all.
I understand why so many people on this board dislike the blog, bcause most of you could probably out-design them. As someone who is not super talented in that area, I actually really like them (except for the weird things, like the Frankencabinet). What I think makes YHL so popular is that you don't have to be super into design and decorating to do what they do. They're relatable for the everyday homeowner. And while their style isn't wow-worthy compared to other decorating blogs, it IS better than 80% of people's houses, so it gives readers realistic ideas to strive for.

You see the expidit everywhere because it is a good looking, inexpensive, ridiculously functional piece.
Seriously, it is perfect for a nursery or kids space and many others. It is a bookshelf, room divider, table, crap holder. Add baskets, drawers, or doors if you need them.
I own 2. They aren't my best pieces, but I honestly don't know what I'd sub them with.
As for the sunroom, yawn. Enough with the gray walls and white furniture. Stop relying an accessories for color and depth. You know what my eye keeps being drawn to in that photo? The wood side table. Only interesting thing.

Lol...me,too. We have a few pieces from JCP, my grandparents beautiful bedroom set and a "good" chair my parents handed down to us, but I am drawn to Ikea's furniture. I like the light, fluffy, cottage-y things. I totally plan on buying the Ektorp sectional for our next home. My taste changes and I grow bored so shelling out a ton of $$$ for nicer pieces, really isn't best for me.

I hope they save their "clams" and keep the rug in there, what they really need to do is get a stained coffee table to balance everything.
I think the brick painted gray looks like cinder blocks. It feels like a prison. The rest I'm not mad at, but I do agree with HB that it'd be nice to see them invest in some quality pieces and maybe discuss how they decide what pieces to splurge on, vs. where to go the IKEA route.
We don't have an IKEA, nor would I likely shop there much if we did, so I'm pretty over their everything cheap! style.
The gray is cold, and the balance is completely off. BUT I have expedit love. I have Ikea love (in moderation). The better not paint that side table--all the warmth in the room is from that piece; plus it would be a crime.
Maybe your annoyance with YHL is less about this room and more a build up of disgust on their upward mobility in the design world when they clearly do not know what they're doing? They curate shops for Joss & Main, stores work with them for promos, and they now have their own lighting line. All of this is based on a design blog about bad design, but a pp makes a point that they and their home are relatable. Their home looks/feels normal to most people and also looks good to most people. As long as people continue to enjoy their work, they will continue to make bad decisions. And as long as the masses continue flocking to their website, other stores will continue to promote them.

:Y: This is well said. They have generated a huge public platform for themselves (New York Times bestseller!), and yet they don't have a design sense that is something that should be awarded. I've made this point before, that there is a huge disconnect between who becomes popular and who actually has talent. I acknowledge that their home is relatable, and that people can go to Target or IKEA and mimic their style. But they are not arbiters of good taste. It is bad design. They traffic in their adorable child and dog and their own personalities--which make for great PR--but behind that is not good design.
So they win at capitalism, but not taste, in my opinion.

I've complained about YHL before, but I feel like I need to defend them in some way for the comments being made about their "design blog." Their blog is about DIY, which of course does involve some element of design, but I would never call their blog a "design blog." They've definitely done some design kind of projects with their Joss & Main collections and lighting line, but overall, I don't think they are trying to be a true design blog in the way that Bryn Alexandra or others are, so I don't really think it's fair to judge them on that standard.
