I'm obviously no expert at this, but I think it is fine. V is a pain in the rear about sleeping, but she actually has fallen asleep without incident every time we have had her out somewhere past her bedtime. We were at my sister's wedding last month and she slept through 4 hours of blaring live music-- I couldn't believe it. I figure I can't put my life on hold forever for things like this-- we just try to go and make the best of it.
He'll be fine. At 4 months we did a week-long road trip with DD and she was a champ. She spent most of last summer in a car going between PA and MA, and again did fine. An occasional off-day isn't going to kill him.

My baby must be the lone weirdo. We went out to Seder dinner and he got to bed about 3 hours later than normal. It was a disaster. He wouldn't fall asleep and then he woke up every 45 minutes. It was very very bad. We won't be doing it for a while.

Same with kari. We went to a dinner at the cousins house. We tried to put her down upstairs at her usual bedtime. No way. I had to hold her while she slept for an hour in the dark. But my child is also kinda tough in the crib. We have also come home later than her bedtime. She sleeps in the car on time but usualy wakes up when we come inside and then is a nightmare to out back down. But every baby is different. Now we take the stroller with us so we can walk her to sleep if necessary.

Go and try to enjoy. It might be hectic, or it might be fine. We try to stick to the routine whenever possible but definitely didn't/don't sweat it when the occasional party interrupts.
It all depends on the baby. DS was a fantastic sleeper and could sleep anywhere up until he was 6 months old. We went on 4 round trip flights by the time he was that age and he was so well behaved. Unfortunately, after the 6 month mark my child decided he needed routine and a crib mattress to sleep well (he HATES the PNP). We can push his bed time later but I never know what I will get the following day.
All of this to say just try and see what happens. We flew up to CT two weeks ago and DS was great on the way up and a complete nightmare on the flight back
