Because the base isn't providing a fireworks show for the Fourth of July this year. It's during rainy season, most people/ families visit home over summer, and it's PCS season. It's usually a small turn out.
Here's some real life comments from FB:
"did you hear they took away the 4th of july?" "You should be ashamed of yourselves. I'm embarrassed for our military." "but it is the responsibility of an American military base to celebrate such an important and patriotic holiday. As far as I'm concerned, that shouldn't be a "business decision," it should just be a given." "It is not right for them not to have fireworks cause it is celebrating our husbands and past. They have taken plenty of our money by raising prices at the stores already. "
Seriously?! I know it sucks, but you're so entitled you think a company should put on a celebration for YOU, even if it's not in their best interest, when they provide a TON of services for the small base with little resources to begin with??
I have to vent some where. I'm connected with an organization on base and I don't want to get into arguments with people we may be reaching out to later on.
Wow! I was just talking with C about our local base raising the prices for passes to the pool, and similar reactions people are having. You would the the military is forcing people to give up their first born.
I am all for attempting to cut expenses on frivolous activities (I.E. A under attended fireworks show, a pool during the summer ect), instead of cutting expenses in training, supplies, ect.
Considering how expensive firework shows can be, I don't really have a problem with this. Spending is being cut across the board, and things like a firework show are a non-essential quick way to cut that without interrupting very much. No one is saying "YOU CAN'T CELEBRATE 4TH OF JULY" they're just not doing fireworks. jeez. They can still do tons of other things to celebrate. Yeah, it might fee like they're "missing" something, but I would rather miss that than other things they could cut.

They should all pool together and pay for the fireworks themselves if it's that important to them. I don't think I've seen a real fireworks show in like six years.. I'm so unamerican -.-

Our base in Japan threatened to get rid of it b/c of all the rain, but it did happen.
I'm totally fine with them canceling, though. When people are bartering first aid kits for toner cartridge (true story), there isn't money for fireworks.

So glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! It's a bummer, but I'm thankful to at least have a PX/ commissary to shop at to avoid feeling completely secluded. I get it's hard to be stationed overseas, but it's time to grow up and stop being entitled.

Dude, it's not that hard. Japan has freaking fireworks competitions if you're that into them. Plus, the groceries there are awesome. I would have only missed a variety of grains beyond rice if I didn't have a commissary.
