We are currently shopping for a sleeper sofa. We have been to about 5 different places and can't find what we want in a sleeper. We went to Macy's, Havertys, LaZBoy and a few others.
Where do you furniture shop? I feel like they all have terrible reviews and issues. We can't decide on leather or fabric, warranty or no. It seems like the warranty never covers what we need, but I always purchase it. No clue why. Any couch buying tips?? I'm completely overwhelmed and have no idea why. We just can't decide on anything.
Room&Board, C&B, CB2, Ikea (I've bought a futon from Ikea that I was happy with, but I heard their sofas don't hold up well). Our sofa comes from a local non-chain store.

Crate and Barrel's sleepers are too plain for me for the price. I guess I will try Room & Board, but I was hoping to not spend over 2k on a sleeper. Guess you get what you pay for.

If we ever replace our sofa it will be with a sleeper sofa from Room and Board. Our friends have one and think it's great. They did much research about the most comfortable one etc.
I love our Ethan Allen leather couch. We previously had microfiber and with dogs, I hated how much dog hair it collected We also have an ivory fabric chair from there and it still looks really new even with a toddler and 2 dogs.
We went to what seemed like every furniture store in town until we figured out who the manufacturer was of the sofas we liked. Then we found the right size/model online and had it ordered through a local Sam Levitz (who sold other, much bigger/less modern style sofas from that manufacturer). They sold the same model for almost twice the price at Z Gallerie.
All our furniture is from local shops. I like the look of Room and Board, West Elm, C+B, but we don't have any local stores and I don't want to buy w/o checking it out in person.
I was going to suggest this. We have several Basset pieces and really like them. They've held up really well, but we've only had them for 2 years so I can't attest to the wear long term.
In general, I feel like you get what you pay for when it comes to furniture. So, you have to judge how much use the piece will get and how long you want it to last, and plan your spending accordingly. You can get away with cheaper stuff in some cases, but for the main sofa in your house you're going to sit on every single day? You probably don't want to go too cheap there. KWIM?

I'm in love with a certain IKEA sofa, but it's not cheap and I've seen other IKEA sofas not hold up well. Anyone had a GOOD experience with an IKEA sofa?

I have a Bassett sofa and loveseat that I'm hoping to replace soon. They've held up really well but are now 8.5 years old and just look tired, plus they're not comfortable anymore and it used to be sooooo comfortable...of course we lie on them rather than sit most of the time so that could be why.
We got ours from SofaMart. www.furniturerow.com/SofaMart/ It has held up really well and we got it at a good price point.
We looked at a huge range of stores including Amish furniture stores, higher-end stores, and "USA" furniture big-box (where they looked baffled when we asked if they had any sofas that were made in the US :.
We had a Pottery Barn sleeper that we replaced after 7 years (it was still going strong -- just wanted something more modern), and it was very comfortable.
We got a Room & Board non-sleeper last year to replace it. We're very happy with it so far, though I do really regret not going for a sleeper.

We bought an Ikea Erktorp a year ago and I'm very pleased with it. It is a bit on the firm side but the slipcover washes really well and fits like a glove. It was only $400 and when we move I'll probably buy another one.

Our Ikea sofa (Karlstad) is the most uncomfortable couch ever. But it looks pretty good even after 5 years. We just moved it to the basement playroom and replaced it with a LaZBoy leather stationary sofa. It was pricey, but MH laid on every leather couch in town (small town, just two furniture store options) and decided this couch was exactly what he wanted. It's overstuffed and huge and my feet don't touch the ground, but it saved us a 600 miles round trip to Ikea or another furniture store in SLC. The gas savings alone make up for the cost. I have a recliner I sit in most of the time and we don't entertain,so it will work for us. LaZBoy has several really nice sofa options that aren't as outrageous as the one we chose.
I have had an IKEA leather couch for 3 years and it holds up really well and looks great. For my next couch however, I don't want leather. It is too cold when you sit on it in the mornings when its cold in the house, and not a good "take a nap" couch.
