We had an open archway into our bathroom that we had a door installed into. We hired a totally inept handyman who did a terrible job. Wrong size drywall, door wasn't level, i could go on and on.
My question for today is: He used silicone caulking around the door casing since the casing isn't sitting flush on the wall (well except where the light switch is because he was too lazy to remove the switch plate so there's just a gap there). Should we remove the caulking and use wood filler? Does the caulking take paint?
Thanks ladies, I think we have a plan to deal with the rest of his crappy work but not sure about this.
Hmmm, are you sure it's silicone caulk? That type can't be painted. You get a caulk remover and take it out. I'm not sure wood filler would be the easiest thing to use. I would probably just try to caulk over it with painter's caulk if that would work.
Hmm. I have never heard of painters caulk. It feels like silicone but maybe that's what it is. Thanks! I am clearly not experienced in this type of thing! ? Attachment Deleted
It's in the same area as the silicone caulk in the stores but it's cheaper because it's not meant to weather proof or do anything other than make stuff pretty so it would make sense for him to use it. There isn't really a way to tell by looking at it, but I might try painting a small part of it to see if it takes the paint.

I would try to paint it to see if it works. If not, remove it and get the painter's caulk that kaylie mentioned. I would NOT try and use wood filler. It is much easier to get a nice smooth bead of caulk than it is to apply the wood filler (I tried both when we installed four doors and lots of trim in our basement).
