I get it. I live in the same area I grew up in, so I would be lying if I said I never thought about just up and moving somewhere new because in HS I swore I wouldn't live here when I was "old". I really get those feelings after traveling, which makes it like reverse-culture shock when I come home and have depressive thoughts about what I don't like about feeling "stuck" here.
I would love the thrill of going somewhere new and having a fresh start, and often wish I could do it sooner rather than "down the road" which is the plan right now. I won't live here forever, or at least I hope not! But right now it just makes sense for us and we have too many benefits for staying put rather than uprooting. I daydream about where I'd go if that road wasn't so closed off for me, though!

I'm the opposite. I like the south. I like that it is a low col area, I like the food, I like that it is mostly small towns. My favorite part is not having to drive in the snow. Now, of only it weren't so hot right now.

I'm ready to move again also, Stellar. It probably won't be for a while, but I've been trying to drop hints to my H, lol. In general I prefer the south over the north but only certain places. I'd be up for moving somewhere west or even abroad too though.
I'm ready to move too. I live about 2 hours from where I grew up, and besides those two places, I've never lived anywhere else.
The hubs and I are actually considering a pretty big move in the not too distant future (meaning in 5 years or so after his daughter graduates hs), but even that seems so far away. I'm ready to go now!
Stellar, I'm ready to move too. I'm living about 45 minutes away from where I grew up. We're waiting till M is done with school and then we'll figure out what's next, but it'll probably be somewhere bigger with a better art scene for him.

Thanks all! I'm trying to stay focused but I keep dreaming of skyscrapers, public transportation, awesome events, less nosy people and amazing take out. Ha!
You guys are the best.
You can temper that longing by also thinking of things like traffic, summer hot garbage smell, crazy homeless people that smell like pee and want to talk to you about Jesus, and the HCOL.

Like NYC?
It's on the list, but to be completely honest, the idea of working at a big 4 accounting firm or similar is enough to make me not want to do it. I want to enjoy wherever we end up...not working 80 hour weeks and traveling 75% of the year. I mean, I feel like I work a decent amount now, but I know that to have the same lifestyle (which isn't very lavish to begin with), I'd end up working like crazy.
My friends who live in Astoria both work for KPMG and spend more of their time in Dallas than NYC.

I would never consider working 80 hours a week unless it was for myself. I totally hear you on that. But we live way out in the "suburbs" of Brooklyn, so our COL is not as high as it could be. Going out a lot will definitely put a dent in your wallet here though.
I really think H and I should look into moving to an offshore banking center like BVI or Grand Cayman. I do hedge fund administration and he is in hotel sales...it would work perfectly!
I'd be up for moving somewhere west or even abroad too though.
This exactly. Although, I'm not opposed to Chicago or Florida. I do want a big city feel. I'm all over the place right now. I have been watching WAY too much House Hunter: International so I keep dreaming of working from home and living somewhere like Belize.
Ditto. I'd like to live near a bigger city also with access to better food options, public transportation (I hate driving), liberal, and other good stuff but fairly warm weather and nearby places for outdoor activities are big factors for me also. I want it ALL damn it, haha.
But I also really want to move abroad for the experience at some point. I've seriously been thinking about going somewhere to teach English and learn more Spanish if I can get MH on board.

The bolded part is why I love where I live. I am 25 minutes from Washington, D.C. and 10 minutes from the nearest winery, 20 minutes to hiking/waterfall trails, and 20 minutes from an outlet mall. There's a little bit everything close by. (Except the beach, I wish the beach were closer than 4 hours from here...)
Stellar--how far north are you looking at going? I hope the next few years fly by for you!

Lizo -- Everything you mentioned sounds great. MH and I have actually discussed maybe moving to DC in the future because he'd like to apply for federal positions so it's a good possibility he'd be placed there. We've only been there once but enjoyed it. The only 2 things that I wouldn't like is the COL and the weather because I'd really like to move somewhere warmer, but other than that it sounds right up my alley!
Sloths--the COL is what keeps us in the "suburbs" of VA, so we have the benefit of D.C. without the address of Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church or D.C. win-win!
As for the weather I don't know how warm you like it, but we are right now rocking 80's with humidity. It will be like this through September. And really aside of 2010 (I think) we don't really get much snow or cold. I like to think of it as a nice balance of weather. Though I would like more snow/cold, honestly. lol!

I lived in DC when I was younger and didn't really like it. For me, it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
I feel stuck. I really do love the area I live in-I'm close to the beach, we have decent restaurants, major cities are within driving distance, my parents live 20 minutes away etc. My issue is that I'm bored. I want to move somewhere and start over, much like Louietunes, but getting my H on board would not be an easy task.

Were you actually in the heart of D.C.? I've spent a lot of time there, and I hated it, to be honest. I so want to go out there and just be a tourist for a day. I haven't done that since I was a kid. I actually think it would be fun.

I'm in KY so our weather is similar but possibly slightly warmer here (it's up in the mid 90s most summers but down in the 30s in the winter) and I'm still craving hotter weather. Sometimes I like having 4 seasons and getting occasional snow, but I really love the heat and could totally skip winter altogether! I keep saying I belong in the tropics but my born-and-raised Alaskan husband isn't a fan of the idea, LOL.
I live in a southern rural community and pretty much in the same general area as I have been since High School. I love being in the country. Plus I travel for my job and see enough other places to always love coming home.

Another random thought: My brother just moved to California. I've never been, and I fully intend on taking advantage of a free place to stay and roaming around to see if there are any areas I'd like to live.
I live in the country in Florida and I love it. Sometimes I wish I was closer than an hour from the beach, but I love the weather. I am not a northern, snow in the winter kind of person and I would freeze up north.
