I think the cheapest is $50 & priciest single item was $5k. We just gradually collect stuff as we like it. We go to Art festivals & art galleries to look. Even in art galleries there are cheap options in bins often. When we were kid less we did this much more often than we do now. I'm lucky because my family member owns a frame shop so our art is custom framed free or at cost. My kid has a wall of art, most that she did herself--she wants to be an artist. My cousin also is a comic book illustrator & has done some cool stuff for the kids.
I like things on 2 of the four walls. One usually has a window or a large piece of furniture so no need to decorate. The other I like a space to rest. It's not my tried and true rule and each room is different but it's the general concept. I do like less than most people though I think. Everytime I post a pic on here, someone tells me I need more art. All I see is "so much clutter already!" We're all different. I've come to terms with it. My mom's house is chock full of wall stuff. It actually works and looks great. To each their own. As far as what's on the walls, I say whatever. Sometimes I think people get too wrapped up in "Must be Unique! Must be Creative! Must be One of a Kind!" If you love it hang it up already. I only hang things I love, but love for me runs between family memories, antique store finds, and whatever struck my fancy at TJMAXX.
I don't think I have any Home Goods/Target/BB&B type wall art. I'm not a fan. I know I'll end up disliking it in the end, or at least being bored with it, so I don't buy it.
We have a few nice prints, like limited edition water color prints, etc. that we've bought (usually on vacation) and had framed:
(This is a lousy photo of this crab print above the light switches:)
We also have some framed photos:
Wedding photo over the piano:
Some of the photos are "cheap," but at least I can swap them when I get tired of them (excepting the professionally framed ones like the wedding photo).
I also love my $1 yard sale hand painted Monopoly deed:
It's in the guest room for now, but I think it'd be fun in a nursery.
susie, I love the Monopoly painting! Very cool find.
We don't have a ton on the walls, I tend to like things a little more plain. Things we do have up: photos of scenery taken by me, plates, our wedding invitation, a couple paintings from my brother- one is of our grandmas house and one is a forest scene, several mirrors, photo collage of us/family/friends.

How do you know this artist? I think he knows a friend of mine, also an artist.

I just met him/bought from him at an Arts Festival (Cherry Creek Arts Festival).
My DH went to school for Art and Art History, so a lot of what we have on our walls is his work. And, I do photography (mostly weddings, so I'm not hanging clients' work up, but I can take a pic!) so we have my photos framed and hanging. I feel weird buying art b/c of this! I didn't want to hurt my DH's feelings. Once our LO was born, we got some owl-themed art for her nursery, and we are looking into framing imitation blueprints in our bedroom. We are getting there!
I think I would prefer to buy art from etsy or art festivals, vs. Home Goods.

Almost everything on our walls has special meaning to us or we just find quirky. There's no BBB/Homegoods/etc. stuff. I have a hand-painted wooden sign over the TV that says AUDITORIUM. It's from a school and I bought it at a flea market. I have the MrsPaz mirrors (maybe this would be along the lines of BBB art). Two of DS art is framed. A painting of the house where we were married. Two cute whales painted on cabinet doors (better than it sounds, I swear), some botanical prints that I tore out of a book and an O. Winston Link print in our entryway.
I like a mixture of things, and I have no problem with mass produced art being among the different types of things I have on my walls. If I think something is pretty, that's meaningful enough for me. That being said, for example, hanging in my living room I have one large canvas type print from Kirkland's, then a small photo gallery with personal photos, a painting that was painted by my grandmother, and a quilt made by my mom. I think it's a good mix of meaningful and generic, and I happen to like things on every wall so some of them are going to be inexpensive/generic. That's what works for me personally, but I do admire other people's homes that have much more unique and carefully chosen art!

I agree with this. I have always had a mix of things on my walls, including mass produced art, original art and 'stuff' that I thought looked good hung up even though it was not meant to be hung on the wall. We have collected more original art as the years have passed, but it doesn't mean that I still won't hang just about anything on the wall.
My issue with mass produced stuff is that I know people who buy it just because it matches the colors in their room, and not because of content or anything meaningful. I guess I like things that have more limited productions so that you don't see the exact same thing in every house you go into...assuming that you and your friends have similar styles/taste. ;p
