Wow...those are great places to visit! I don't have a guess on the trip cost really, but I would sock aways as much as possible and try to make them all. Very cool.
I would save as much as you can in the meanwhile. My concern would be that with only 1 months notice, you won't be able to get a good deal on airfare. One thing you could do is start accruing mileage tha tyou may be able to use for free tickets. Like you could open an AA Citibank card for 40,000 miles and use that to go to Scotland.
What a great opportunity! I've joined H on a business trip to London/UK that got extended and it was great because I'd never been there and we only had to pay for my flight plus the cost of the extra days we were there that he wasn't working. Fortunately, we have a large travel budget that was able to absorb the cost and we had just cashed in our home leave flights for the year to the tune of $3200, some of which went to our travel budget.
I would definitely save up as much as you can - absolutely the cost of the flights and dog boarding, and more if you can. We do things pretty cheaply, but ultimately travel always ends up costing more than we would like it to - restaurants are expensive, we find things we want to buy, transportation while there, etc.
I think you're going about it the right way. If you're worried about not having enough, you could just sock away as much money as possible. If you don't end up using it all, babymoom
Agree with previous posters - I would save about $5k for the flights and also try to have around $1k at least for incidentals and other expenses (baggage fees for example). I'm so envious, that sounds wonderful and I hope you get to take the trips because I want to hear about them!!
How much do you estimate to spend on traveling? Flights, food, cars, tourist stuff..? I would divide that by 12- and save a bit every month. Sounds like an amazing way to travel!! DH's work doesn't allow spouses on their trips, I would go with him in a heartbeat if I could
