My Gram's is still the best I have ever had. I don't know the recipe off hand, but I can ask my mom for you. It is pretty simple, rump roast, potatoes, carrots, and peas. So good.
1 can beef broth, 1 packet onion soup mix in a crock pot. Season the roast with salt and pepper and brown it in a skillet. Put the roast, carrots, potatoes and onions in the crock pot. I'm actually making it tomorrow, I've got my veggies all cut up and ready to go.
I've never used a cooking liquid. Usually the juice from the bacon kind of absorbs into the roast, and there is always enough drippings left over for yorkshire pudding and gravy.

This is so easy, and fail-proof. And delicious.
put seasoning salt, garlic powder, and fresh ground pepper on the bottom of the crock pot. Put in the pot roast. add more of that seasoning to the top. More is good. Put in a bay leave, and add about a cup or so of beef broth (I make one from a Penzey's beef broth base, but you could just buy it too). Put on the lid, and cook for about 6 hrs on high, or 8 hours on low.
I made this for my ILs the last time they visited. FIL said it was the best pot roast he'd had since his mother's when he was a child (and later called to ask for the recipe). And that the only reason he couldn't say it was better than his mom's was because it was his mom.
You could add carrots, onions and potatoes on top of the roast, but I'm a purist and like to cook the meat in the crock pot with the other stuff on the side.
