I got married in 2009 - neither of us ever changed our W4. I read something on here recently that we shouldn't be getting so much $$ back on our tax refund(return?). The goal was to be as close to 0 as possible.
So, please help me understand WTF I need to do to fix this. I've googled, but all I get is a bunch of complicated answers that I don't understand.
in 2012: DH made 52k, I made 27k no kids, no retirement (don't start with me on that one, that is a goal in the coming months)
last year we got a little over 2k back, this year we will get around 2800... I love money at the beginning of the year, but I'd rather have more throughout the year - I'm embarrassed to even be asking about this.
Go to www.irs.gov and check out the withholding calculator. That is the best way to see what to do. They'll tell you how many allowances to claim (probably 1 each?) and then if necessary a certain dollar amount to withhold in each paycheck.

I think paycheckcity.com has a w4 calculator but I've never used it. I assume you are both still withholding at a single rate? Just off the top of my head, I would probably switch your w4 to married and leave DH's alone. That should withhold less income tax from your paycheck but not enough where you'd owe at the end of the year. I think paycheck city may be able tell you what your take home would be if you make a change. You probably should aim to take home $150-200/month more than you currently are.
