For Wop or anyone else interested, here's our Ikea kitchen. You guys might have seen it before but I haven't been able to post much lately. It's pretty much done now. We did all the work ourselves and the final cost of everything (cabs, appliances, counters, hardware, fixtures, etc) was around $8,500. The only thing that we didn't replace was the floor.
I follow your blog and really loved your remodel. Plus I like how you took an out of the box kitchen and still customized pieces to make it look more built-in.

Aw thanks I've really fallen off the wagon for posting on my house stuff.

I don't think the Lidingo come in black...they used to come in a darkish stained wood color as well but I don't know if they still do. I think they have an espresso color in another door style, though. The downside of using the non-white cabinets is that I don't think they have cabinet boxes to match, so the inside will either be white or a light wood color. They may have started making dark cabinet boxes, since we ordered ours almost 2 years ago, so don't quote me on that. I think House Tweaking used one of their espresso door styles for part of their kitchen remodel.
I mostly want to know what my non-white options are. Thanks for the info! I might have a made a day trip out of going there to check it out. How do you go about ordering? We have a small very simple galley kitchen that doesn't really lend itself to creativity with cabients, so it's mostly ordering the confiruration we have now in a different color if we decide to go that route.

Consumer Reports rated them highly a few years back for cabinets in that price range. They are nowhere near as nice as custom cabinets, or even brands like Kraftmaid, but we paid around $2700 for the cabinets which include soft close doors, Blum hardware, pullout shelving, and a couple of glass front doors. Some people don't like that the cabinet boxes are made from particle board/laminate, but really once they are all assembled you don't notice. They seem durable to me and supposedly hold up well, and they come with an awesome warranty. The insides are not luxurious (the drawers are metal) but once we put down drawer liners and organizers and filled them with stuff, I don't even notice.

I think you can see pics of the door styles online. The store by me had a good kitchen design staff, and you can also download the kitchen design tool. I'd highly recommend doing that instead of trying to do it all in store to get an idea of what size cabinets you want. Some of the cabinet sizes might differ slightly, and I know one big change for us was that we went with a bigger sink cabinet, so that affected surrounding cabinets. They have pullout shelving cabinets, cabinets with drawers, and cabinets with wire baskets (I wouldn't get those). I'd either go with pullout shelving or cabinets with drawers for the base cabinets. It doesn't sound like you have any corners, but that was a tricky part for us too that was different than our original layout.
thanks for sharing decoraholic! I'm almost 100% going with an ikea kitchen when we do our remodel so I'm really interested in seeing real life examples. I like that you went with a very neutral and simple look. It's peaceful.
I'm looking at Ramsjo and doing the 2 tone look with black-brown lowers and white uppers.
I'm really encouraged by your price too. We have behind the scenes work to do with insulation, plumbing and electrical, but the kitchen is smaller than yours so hopefully we can still keep costs low.

To see the different door styles, check out the Akurum/Rationell cabinets. That's what they call their whole line of kitchen cabs, and then you just buy whatever door style you like.

Thanks! I really like the Ramsjo, especially the dark color. I LOVED the Ramsjo door style, but was worried that the white would look a little pinkish in our house, since everything seems to read pinker/yellower in my house with our lighting. I sometimes still second guess going with the Lidingo over the Ramsjo. We didn't have to do any major plumbing or electrical, so it was all within our (and my dad's) capability. He helped us move and add a couple outlets (he was an electrician when he was younger). We really hunted for deals on everything too, like our counters were only around $34/sf. We got all of the appliances except the dishwasher as scratch and dents, floor models, and returns.
that's beautiful! PP mentioned you have a blog- do you mind sharing the link? I am always looking for new ones for my reader
Sure! I've been bad about keeping up with my house blog, but it's at involvingcolor.com/involvinghome/ . I've got guys in my house as we speak installing a tub and tile in our hallway bath, so I promise I have some big updates to come
I have a paint color blog too. I've featured some of you - SSM JLM for one! involvingcolor.com/
I'm so glad you posted this - I've actually been looking at your pics recently because we're about to use the lidingos to build a kitchen island and I forgot who this kitchen belonged to! It's absolutely gorgeous and showing my H pictures of it got him on board with the white cabinet/kashmir white combo that he'd been previously skeptical of =)

Thanks! I had to show pics of the white cabinets with kashmir white to my H too to get him on board
Question: I know you custom made your peninsula trim, but did you ever find anything that was at all similar for sale? We just aren't that handy and I definitely want to trim out the island.

You could do basic board and batten with trim from Home Depot. We wanted the routed edge to tie in a little better to the cabinets, but I think a board and batten would look nice too. There are tons of good how to guides online for board and batten. It's easier because the edges are square so you just need a saw (table saw or miter saw) to cut it.

Thanks! I think we can manage board and batten and I might try to use some panel molding to give it extra shape.

I've seen people use doors as trim too installed around islands/peninsulas. It can get pricy, though. The doors are the most expensive part of the Ikea cabinets.
quick question - when was your house built? I love the molding you did around the top, but I'm hesitant to do that in a 'too modern' house...
1985. I think crown looks good in homes of all years, but I love crown molding!
I disagree. I think crown molding looks wrong in a very contemporary/modern house. It is one of my peeves with what we are finding in our house hunting, and one of the things that looks wrong to me in some of our neighborhood homes on the market. We have too many weird angles and places that you have end the crown strangely, which should be a clue that it doesn't work in the space.

Kitchen looks great! You did a really amazing job customizing it.
We have a more modern ikea kitchen. I love it. The soft close is great and I personally love the interior drawers. So easy to organize. I don't think I could live without pull out drawers after having these.
That looks amazing decoraholic! I love all of the moulding details you added at the top and on the peninsula. I'm way behind on my blog reading but I look forward to catching up on all the details. Oh and some bathrooms too! You know I'm all about those.
