H ask a really random question today at lunch: Why is it called a grilled cheese sandwich? He's never seen anyone grill bread to make a sandwich. (And neither have I.)
So, if you have ever made a grilled cheese sandwich, how did you make it?

butter on the bread, multiple slices of cheese (2 at the very minimum) in between the buttered bread, then put on a hot sautee pan for a couple mins each side until golden brown on outside and melty on the inside.
sometimes adding bacon, tomato slices, and/or basil leaves.

I put little olive oil in a pan, let it heat up. Put one slice of bread in the pan, ensure it cooks evenly. Repeat cooking process (with olive oil) with 2 slices of bread on each side. Place 2 slices of American cheese between the two slices of bread and cook in pan just long enough to melt the cheese.
