We had mice this summer in the basement. I highly recommend these traps:
made by Tomcat - you can get them any old place, I think ours came from Walmart. They work way better than these:
The plastic ones got robbed of their peanut butter way less often; we had more catches. They're also easier to empty when you catch one. It works just like a clothes pin.
They make bait stuff in a bottle, but peanut butter works just as well.

We had the cheapys and they worked fine. We baited with peanut butter. We consistently got them in the same place every fall (despite trying to figure out where they were coming in) so we just always left a trap in that spot.
Please just don't use the sticky traps! They're terrible! My friend's husband put one down at their house without her knowing. She came home, heard squeaking and found a little mouse on it trying to chew his little leg off. She started crying and tried to pull it off; it, of course, bit the crap out of her finger.

I usually try and find out what they are getting into and help eliminate a food source. I got rid of paper sacks and plastic ziploc bags in my pantry and that helped. I like the live traps. They have some where you dont even have to look at the mouse which is nice. We don't do poison because we have a dog.
We've had a problem with mice in our garage. We live in a new construction area, so it's expected right now. We've been using a live trap that I bought from DIY pest control. It has a clear lid so we can see when one is caught. We release them in a field far from our house - across a highway, etc. It's been working really well. It's bated with peanut butter, and we've caught 6 mice so far. I also have some traps set that aren't live ones, and those have caught nothing (also bated with peanut butter). I need to just throw them away.

DH accidentally brought a box out to the shed that he thought was Christmas decorations. It was extra craft supplies and I brought it back in the house. I found mouse droppings in it and it had chewed up some of the paper. I'm hoping it just came in through the box so we don't get more of them. I live in an old farm house in the woods. I haven't found any mouse droppings anywhere else.

Does what make a mess? The trap? No. No gore, no yuck any time I've cleaned it out. It breaks their necks, but not in a way that seems any grosser to me than if I came across a mouse that had died of natural causes.
