Last weekend I fell in love with a coffee table. I was browsing around at this place that makes really cool custom furniture and saw that they were making tables from the salvaged benches taken from UC Berkeley's memorial stadium (they re-did the stadium). We used to live practically on campus during grad school and we used to go to the football games - I thought H would really love a coffee table. They were finished so beautifully and preserved so much of the character of the wood - they really spoke to me.
The finished table was $$$ between the table top and the custom base, so I took a week to think it over. I decided to spring for the finished table top (about a third of the price), and try to convince my completely rad neighbor with a metal shop in his garage to make me a frame for it.
Here's a crappy cell phone picture of a sample table top
and here's a nicer picture that shows how beautiful the finished wood is
I'm hoping to convince my neighbor to build me a frame for it - someone linked this table a few weeks ago, think he can come up with somehting similar?? Squee!! I'm so excited!! I've got 10-12 weeks to sweet talk him into it
I think I know where you were . You must be really close to me! I tried to talk dh into a garden bench from there, since he went to uc, but he wasn't interested. Boo. Can't wait to see your table!
Btw, they suck for taking those out. Th new metal benches are the worst. My ass is still cold from the Oregon game.
we haven't been since they put in the metal ones. We moved to NJ for 2 years before just accepting we were bay area people and high-tailed it back last year.
I love so much of their furniture. sigh. if money was no object.
I'm not going again unless it's warm, which never happens.
Let me know if I'm being creepy, or feel free to pm, but are you east side or peninsula? I don't know if there are any other Bay Area d&rers. How exciting!

Not creepy at all (I harbor a secret crush on your house). We live in the east bay- we've settled in Castro valley. We both work on the penninsula though.
Someday we should meet up at urban ore or something!
I really like the character of the wood and it sounds perfect for you. H had a few workbenches made for his garage with bases like that and had them done for a couple cases of beer on top of the materials. So I hope your neighbor will make it for you.
