It's time to get DD a swimsuit. I'd like something with lots of coverage because she is very fair (like all babies!) and was planning to get something like this:
I'm feeling kind of extra paranoid considering the recent death of my H's young cousin in their pool, but I have heard that the swimsuits with floaties built in are more annoying than helpful.
What do you think? Swimsuit with floaties or regular swimsuit and a floaty chair for DD?
As you know, I am quite fair, as is LO. I buy him board shorts and long sleeve rash guards. So, I think the more you cover, the better!
As for the built in floaties, I'm of the school of thought that things like floaties and water wings give children and parents a false sense of security. I would vote for a floatie chair-thing. My LO preferred being held while in the water--which made it easy.
I can understand your heightened concern given the recent death of your DH's cousin. Accidents like that can really rock a parent.
1) They were awkward. I wasn't able to modify the floatie system to meet changing needs, nor stick my kid in a carseat in their suit (I prefer to sunscreen up and suit up at home)
Thanks! This is what I was thinking -- all the points you both made. The ones with floaties built in do look horribly tricky to get on and off.
Obviously I would never leave her alone in the water at this age, she will be held at all times, but I was wondering if there was something I was missing.
Ok, so I'll get the nifty suit which is cuter anyway. ;D
I vote no floaties. I'm guessing that at her age when she doesn't have as much strength as a 2-4 year old they won't do much to stop her from drowning.
When I take kids to the pool I am not a big fan of floaties. False sense of security and some of them are just horrible. But the ones that belt on to the back and or tummy are great to help build up courage when learning to float and practicing stokes away from the side.

Yea dd has a long sleeve 2 piece cause it's easier to get on and off and floaties do get in the way, even if they are just trying to sit, as long as they are supervised at all times around water I don't see the need, also they say here they aren't good be because kids get a false sense of security and forget it was just the suit when they are without it which can be dangerous

DD just turned 2 and I have never used a floatie. In the outdoor baby pool she would walk around and I would just keep a close eye on her. Every once in a while she would go under but she'd be back out in a spilt second (when I pulled her back up). I honestly don't think a floatie would have helped her at all from drowning. She may not have submerged completely but her face would probably still go under enough to potentially drown. I am also not a believer in these things because of the false sense of security.
We are members at the YMCA and my friend and I go swimming once a week with our babies (have since they were 6 months old). This past January they decided to make it mandatory for anyone under 48" to wear a life jacket, except in the baby pool. We were able to get away with not doing it for several weeks after just talking to the (male) lifeguard about how it is dumb since I have Dd in my arms at all times in the big pool and a life jacket actually interferes with that and IMO makes it less safe. They always agreed and think it is dumb too because they don't use them in swimming lessons. A few weeks ago a female lifeguard got on our case and I haven't been back since (now the outdoor pool is open for the season). We put on a life jacket on the kids and the were flailing all over the place and it made it no fun. They don't fit right because DD is little (only 23#) and I feel that it makes it less safe. But I guess the Y's insurance made them do it to cover their butts because I guess a lot of people don't like to actually watch their kids when they swim.
So long story short....I would bag the floatie like everyone else said

Popcorn, I got DD some iplay rash guard shirts from mytoys.de (like 10 Euros maybe?) And if it´s your first order you can find codes for 10 Euros for the site if you google Gutschein and mytoys. And you´ll have your order faster and not have to worry about any duty.

www.mytoys.de/Bademode/Baby-M%C3%A4dchen-Gr-56-104/KID/de-mt.cw.ca01.04.04/ This is the link to the swimsuits. They don´t seem to have the same ones I got last year, but they have the playshoes ones as well as some others. And if you use this code you get 10 Euros off an order of 30 Euros or more: 4BKM89ZHG56X
