How did you meet your significant other?

This is my random post contribution.

I have been single for just about six months now and I would like to start dating again in the near future. Since that's on my mind, I'm curious how all of you met your significant others. I was 20 when I met my ex, so I have little-to-no experience dating as an adult.

Senior year of college. Engineering school that was 75% male... The odds were good, but the goods were odd.

We met on the internet. I tell people I ordered him on Amazon .
Really, I was going through my divorce and we met and chatted/commiserated about our mutual divorce experiences. We ended up meeting up one day when he was in my area and I had a date cancel on me. We have been together ever since.

First day of sophomore year a guy I was hooking up with brought me to a party at my now husbands (apartment. I lost all interest in the guy that brought me to the party and started dating my H. That guy was in our wedding. He wasn't allowed I give a speech;)

We met in college and then reconnected 10 years after we graduated via Facebook

DH and I met at work. I fell in love with him on his first day.

If I were dating now, i'd likely do a combo of match.com, meetups, church, and the Boston/Mass sports & social clubs

Through our best friends. My best friend and college roommate, was dating D's best friend from high school. So we had met each other on and off through that connection. We started dating maybe 4 years later. We were maid of honor and best man in our friends' wedding and they in ours. And they now live up the street from us. Also, connected are our other best friends who live next to scm1011. It's a weird little college, work, roommate combo on how we all know each other.

You know, I was just thinking last night that I don't know the story of how you guys met.  Tell us more!

The weekend I moved to my apartment I got sick of unpacking and decided to wander around the Prudential Center.  I was in line at Starbucks and he was next to me in line.  We just started chatting and then there was only one open table so we sat together.  We texted non-stop for about 2 weeks after that and had plans to go for sushi on a Sunday night.  The Friday before the sushi we were texting and he was leaving work.  I asked if he wanted to meet for a drink that night.  The first date was actually kind of awkward.  I cut myself shaving and in rushing out the door to meet him I hadn't noticed.  I was bleeding everywhere. The second date (still sushi that Sunday, followed by a long walk around my neighborhood) was much better.

He (jokingly!) told me to tell people we met at a bar.  I guess that's more acceptable to men?

My DH and I grew up together and started dating immediately after HS. 

Would you do online dating? The Stir from Match.com looks like it would be so fun and noncommittal.

fuddyduddy, I am no help.  I met my H in college when I was 19.  Mutual friends, etc.

I met my husnad on EHarmony...I was a doctoral student and needed to meet someone outside of my field and the bar scene is so not my scene.

I met my H freshman year in college. On a total whim, I went to an intro swing dance lesson put on by the college ballroom dance team for freshman orientation. (If you knew me back then, you would know this was very out of character for me!). I got hooked on dancing by the pretty dresses (they're bedazzled!). I ended up joining the club/team and my H was on the team. We started dating around Thanksgiving. A short 13 years later we got married. I like to tell people we took the scenic route.

I have no dating advice whatsoever. My H is actually the only guy I ever dated. If I had to start dating now, I think I'd do the online route. It seems the most successful and proactive way to do it (although I'm sure it can be frustrating). I'd also hit up pretty much everyone I knew to set me up with their single friends.

That's adorable, re: you and your husband.

I am open to online dating and I will look into meetup groups and social/sports clubs. I wish I lived closer to Boston in order to make going to such events less of an inconvenience.

I would. Due to my busy schedule, it will likely be the most effective/efficient option for me at the moment. I haven't heard of The Stir. What is it? (I'll Google if you don't feel like explaining.)

Have you heard the radio commercials for Events & Adventures? www.lotsofevents.com/ I guess it is activities for single people, but isn't a dating service. Their commercials make me want to be sneak into their activities because they sound so fun (not because I am looking for a date, lol).

Yeah, it was fun!  We actually danced competitively in college for about 3 years.  I loved it!  I wish we still had time for it.  Too bad lessons are so expensive.

I wish I had people to set you up with!  I'll have to think about it.  Unfortunately H doesn't have a lot of guy friends.  You know the other thing I'd do?  Speed dating.  It seems like such an efficient way to meet a bunch of people at once.  I feel like so often you know within 5 mins whether you click with someone or not.  May as well meet 10 guys in one night than waste 10 evenings on bad dates.

The stir, from what I understand, are events thrown by match.com. So like cooking classes, bowling (these are from the commercials I've seen) etc so you go and meet other single people in more of a group setting. I tried googling to see if there were any in Boston but it looks like it's part of the match.com membership.

That is so neat. I've done a tiny bit of swing dancing and I really enjoy it. You two should find a place to go dancing every so often! It would be a great date night.

I bet speed dating would be fun with a friend. Worst case scenario: I'll end up with some good stories! I might ask some of my single nursing school buddies if they want to try it. They tend to be much more comfortable in the bar/club scene than me and I need some of that extroverted energy, which I am sorely lacking, to feed off of.

Interesting. That sounds similar to the Events and Adventures program jenikate mentioned. Both are great ideas.

Look into BSSC's activities, fuddyduddy (Boston Ski & Sports Club). They have a ton of different fun activities and are well organized. Some of their leagues might be closer to the north shore, but I'm not positive.

I wish I played more team sports as a kid. I was into swimming, figure skating, and gymnastics. My hand-eye coordination needs some improvement. Those activities sound right up my alley, though. I might look into signing up for some events/leagues in the summer, when I have more time. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm glad to hear that. My friends in LA haven't experienced much success with JDate, but I think that may be due to the general culture there. I will likely give it a try.
