DH and I are going to visit my brother in Brooklyn and will be attending Avenue Q on Friday night and going on "The Ride" on Saturday night. We are planning on doing some sightseeing in Manhattan during the day on both Friday and Saturday and staying in Manhattan for the nighttime events. I am now wondering if we are needing to be more dressed up for these nighttime events than what we will be wearing for sightseeing during the day. We will be wearing nice jeans and sweaters. What do you think?
"The Ride" is that bus tour of the city, I'm getting from Google?
Nice jeans and sweaters would be fine. I've seen so many tourists dressed like slobs. If you're walking around, just dress to be comfortable (including shoes) and don't carry a huge bag that you have to lug around. Your average joe bopping around NYC isn't that fancy. You shouldn't need nicer clothes unless a club or restaurant has a specific dress code.
If you really feel out-of-place or if you didn't bring something warm enough, there are stores everywhere where you can buy a cheap scarf or sweatshirt or something if you really need it.
My standard recommendation for Brooklyn is Fette Sau BBQ. Drooool ...

I've lived in NYC for 10 years and had to google what "the ride" was just now! Is it a tour bus where you face the side as opposed to the front? If so, then you definitely don't need to be dressed up for that. I tend to dress for the theater (especially since I usually go straight from work) but you will see people dressed in all styles so if it's just comfortable/easier for you to stay in well-fitted jeans and neat sweaters then that's fine. People get slightly more dressed up for other performing arts, like the opera and ballet, but Broadway is a bit more casual nowadays.
Unless you're planning on going to swanky restaurants/bars/clubs (in which case jeans are still okay, but you'd probably want to wear something nightlifey on top), you'll be absolutely fine. You'll probably see people who are more dressed up than you for Avenue Q because some people still get dressed up for Broadway, but you'll be perfectly appropriate. Perfectly appropriate for most restaurants and bars too.
What do you consider night events? Like going to swanky bars and clubs?
Going to Avenue Q on Friday and "The Ride" on Saturday. I am mostly worried about looking too casual for Avenue Q.
I think that's a really light-hearted show, so I doubt jeans and a sweater would be too casual. I'm sure most tourists will be dressed down even more than that.
I used to work right by that theater. I probably should've stopped to see the show at some point, lol. I think the stop for the bus tour (or *a* bus tour, anyway) was right across the street outside the Food Emporium supermarket. There's a lot of good (and cheap) restaurants down on Ninth Avenue, too.
Thanks ladies! We leave next week and I am just now starting to think of all the little logistics like that. I really appreciate you putting my mind at ease.
The Ride is really fun! I bring a lot of my visitors on it. Trick is to not read too much about it or talk to anyone who has done it. Takes away from the surprise!
