As a spin off to the dust and open shelves, I'm looking at the HoH post and kitchens with fake vines and such on the cupboard tops and thinking 'oh hell no'. I just see dust catchers and time wasted cleaning them. I also have no space to put anything useless so that probably affects my opinion, too. I have pretty things in my kitchen, but they are functional - soap pump, dish towels, utensil holder, etc.
so if you have things that are strictly decor, what is it and where is it and does it get as dirty as I'm imagining it would? Or maybe you're lucky and don't live in a dust bowl :-)
I have a long ledge over my sink where I keep a bunch of my prettier kitchen items that hardly ever get used. My milk glass, my glass lemonade pitcher set from Tiajuana, my antique food scale, etc. All stuff I'd hate to hide in a cabinet and don't really have the space for anyway. Plus I keep a framed drawing DH bought me while we were dating and a plant there. Not gonna lie, it does get dusty, but dusting everything on it is on my list of things to dust monthly, so it never gets too bad. I don't put dust catchers in places like above the cabinets because it would just be too difficult to do regularly. With the ledge, at least I can reach it without a ladder.
Behind my stove I have a long narrow picture my Mom gave me. It serves as sort of a fun backsplash and fits perfectly. It's just a cheaper picture and it Windexes easy enough, so I just do it when I wipe down the stove. No big deal.
I also have a tree decal with birds over my pantry cupboard/island area. However, it's far enough away from everything, it's not ever really dirty and again easy clean.
Everything else is functional. Soap dispenser, towels, a basket of Rubes supplies on the counter. I took my valance down over the sink window because it was greasy and dusty all the time. Drove me nuts. We just have blinds now.
I hate clutter and decor for the sake of decor, so I'm fine with what I have.
I'm a minimalist Especially in the kitchen. We have a pretty blue glass ball with bubbles in the windowsill above the sink, and 2 aloe plants, but thats it
I forgot - I hang trivets & a cookbook holder. They're decorative looking and functional. I also have 3 Spode cannisters on my counter - they hold flour, sugar, and tea - I used them pretty frequently. And there's a calendar hanging on the wall. Very practical stuff.
I had a decorative plate and a tile thing on the only wall without a cabinet. It helped take the attention off of the answering machine, but I took them down to paint and never put them back up. I have a copper grater and an old, not really functional sifter on top of the one cabinet that is lower than the other. They fill the space, don't show the dust, and both clean easily enough.
Everything else is functional, and some things are both decorative and functional..like the fruit bowl.
I have out a couple decorative teapots, a white planter in the windowsill, and I always have out decorative tea towels. Other than that I don't have much. I'd rather have the space for cooking since I don't have a lot of counter space.
My kitchen is decorated like my antique dishes, mostly with paint, but I also have tiles on the soffit. They're easy to dust once a week though. No fake vines LOL
I have an African violet on the windowsill and a bunch of cookbooks lined up on the mantel. The latter is mainly because I don't have any "real" decor to go on the mantel. I want to get something to display DD's artwork (maybe a bulletin board or French memo board). I also have been coveting a batik floral table runner at Target but DH is against spending money on things that aren't "needs." This is bad for the D&R state of our house as you may imagine.
Birdhouse that my son painted on the window sill Sand in bottles from my favorite beaches also on my window sill H's boutonniere from our wedding in my pewter baby cup (weird, I know) on the window sill A tart burner of Motif 1 from Rockport, MA (we used to vacation there as a kid) on the toaster oven A pitcher from my H's hometown of Haxtun, CO on the toaster oven A Spode thing that holds my jewelry when I do dishes

I have stained glass open box that holds potted herbs in my window sill. I collect glass shoes, so there are some in my window sill as well. Ceramic cows that are purple, Giant peace lily plant. Big green hurricane lamp thing full of wine corks. Betty Boop vase that holds all my kitchen brushes and sponges.
