Good but MM DSLR Camera?

DH has been wanting a DSLR for the looooongest time. His bday is coming up and I want to suprise him, but I know less than nothing about cameras.

Any recommendations? Wants something good, (doesn't have to be the "best") and MM.

I have a Nikon D3100 that I really like. You can find packages at Costco or buy the bodies and lenses at Best Buy or camera shops. Mine is a few years old so they have newer models out now. I think if you look you can find them for $800 with two lenses.

I'd recommend a gently used Canon Rebel. Anything from the T1i, T2i, T3i, T4i...all are fine. It doesn't need to be this year's model-they change very little.

And don't buy the lens with it, buy a 50mm 1.8 lens for $100. Also get it used.

Just get an entry level canon or Nikon. Those are two good brands that will grow along with his hobby.

I just got the Nikon D5100. It's a nice beginners camera. You can usually get one for about $500 with an 18-55mm lens, you just have to shop around. I got a great deal for mine at $880 with an 18-55mm and an 18-200mm lens and a starter kit, but I don't think you'll be able to find it that low again.

Here's a refurb for $439.95 and comes with an 18-55mm lens.

ETA:  Actually this one is even better because it comes with a starter kit for $25 more.

another vote for a canon. i have the T1i and love it.

depending on your budget, follow slickdeals. they often have the T4i for really good prices.
