We have a sofa and a love seat, but we also have a pretty small living room. Actually we are planning on buying new furniture soon. DH wants to get two recliners and a sofa, but I'm not sold on the idea.
Our living room actually has two seating areas. One part by the TV has the traditional 3 piece set: couch, love seat and chair. The other area has a chair and end table for DH to play his guitar, so we have his guitars and amp where we could/would have put another chair.
Do you entertain a lot? It's not ridiculous if it looks good and you realistically use all of it.
I have a couch and a little slipper chair. I need more seating, but I don't have the room. I had eight girls here Friday night and we had to sit on the floor

If you have a large living room and it doesn't look weird, I don't see a problem. We have a sectional, a small low back rocking chair, and another chair (I don't know enough about chairs to know the name of what style it is). I also have an old trunk with decorative pillows on it in front of the window for extra seating, but we don't often need to use that, mostly it's just the cats who end up sitting there.
I have a couch and two wing backs in one room and a couch and two club chairs in the downstairs family room. Its all I have space for. If it works for you whatever. My mom has a couch and four chairs in an avg sized square room and it really works for her.
We have a sofa and two chairs in the LR. Comfortably seats 6. In the Family Room I have two large sofas. Can seat 8 comfortably...will one day add two chairs. Sunroom seats 6 comfortably...8-10 when people are boozing it and all smashed together on the daybed LOL

LOL. I want booze at your house!
We have "Wine Down Friday" starting at 5:30 Children are allowed...they all stay upstairs.
We have a rectangle shaped living room, so right now it's the couch, an oversized chair and a leather storage bench, although only if people are over does anyone sit there.
There is no "rule" as to how many seating options you should have for your space. My living room is really large as well and we've got a fancy desk and chair, an upholstered bench (substantial piece, it sits 2-3) and chair in our "reading nook" that we've never used, a sofa, recliner, club chair (with matching ottoman), so that's technically seating for at least 9 right there.

We have seating for 2-3 in our current place, and nowhere else to put seating. The new place ... well, let's just say we'll be in the market for new seating options. Not counting the office chairs and the kitchen table chairs ... we own exactly 4-5 places to put your butt. Probably not enough.
I have a 26' x 14' room with a large 3 seat sofa, a club chair w/ ottoman and an occasional w/ottoman. Seats 7 with the ottomans plus I can easily add 5-6 dining room chairs for a crowd.
