What is the total number of sleep hours for your baby? Night total Nap total
This Ferber book is very good. Sorry for all the sleep posts but I have learned so much and have found answers to questions I didnt even know I had. However, he suggests 6mths old only needs 9.5 hrsat night. I think that seems small, but if it is true it may help Layla sleep longer in the day which will make her a happier kid with a schedule.
We are just past that time frame, but it has been consistent for us since 4 months.
Night Total: 10.5-12 (wakes up at least once to eat) Nap Total: 2.5-4 (over 2 naps) Total: 12.5-16
I would say we usually are closer to the 14-15 range.
We don't CIO, I've never read ferber. I'm a firm believer in early bed times, sleep begetting sleep and follow a 2-2.5-3 routine (our version of the 2-3-4. I do not think 9.5 night time hours is enough for any child or baby under the age of 5 at least. (Of course, there is always an exception)

On weekdays
Night: 12 (2 wake ups, 10 minutes awake at max). Naps: 1-3 hours (usually 1.5) Total: 13-15
Weekends Night: 13 Naps: (2-4) Total: 15-17
We have an early bed time. I don't personally think we do CIO but at naps DS will cry for 2 minutes before falling asleep (I time it!)...but I guess maybe that is CIO? I don't know. I tell myself it is not.
Night: 11, generally with no wake-ups, or 12 if she wakes up after 10 or 11 hours and I can get her to fall back asleep Naps: 2-3ish, split among 3 naps
9.5 hrs at night doesn't sound like enough. If DD gets less than 11 hours, she is a total grouch.

DD is 6 months. For the past month (since sleep training and her naps have become more organized) DD has been doing 10-10.75 at night and 2.5-3 hours in naps, so she typically gets around 13.5 (if we get 14 I consider it a good day).
However, I worry that she is too low, as some things I read suggest a baby her age should be getting 14.5-15. I too have heard Ferber's totals are skewed too low, and DD seems very tired on those days when she only gets in the 12-13 range (which Ferber's book suggests is what she "should" be getting).
I know every baby is different, and DD has never gotten the amount of sleep recommended for her age. However, I think that is because I messed up from birth (I didn't know about age-appropriate wake times, so she was staying up 2.5-3 hours at a time at only 1-2 months old, so she didn't nap well, became overtired, which caused more sleep issues....) So honestly I have no idea if DD sleeps on the low end because she doesn't need as much sleep as other babies or if it is because her sleep debt is just so massively huge that she is always overtired and therefore can't mellow out enough to get the sleep she needs.

I cannot tell you how jealous I am of you. 17 hours of sleep?

I promise the 17 hours is more of the rare side! He does also have days where he refuses to nap at all (but luckily is never cranky about it!).

Just replied to your nap post, but here is more info from the sleep specialist we saw re: sleep requirements. 6-12 months require 14-15 hours. 1 year olds require 13.75-14 hours.
My 15 month old sleeps 11 hours at night and 3-4 hours through naps. This has been a recent and wonderful development though. At 7 months old, he was only sleeping in 45 minute increments for naps ( unless he was in his swing) and waking 4-6 x a night.
Emily sleeps 930 to 630 at night and then takes two naps for a total of two to three hours. So twelve hours of sleep? She also naps in the car so another hour?
