My name can be shortened to Jess or Jessie. I don't answer to them. Usually people call me Jess when we're already having a conversation, I'm pretty sure I flinch when they do though. I would never respond if someone called out Jess trying to get my attention. I hate nicknames.
I am Jessica pretty much exclusively at work. Even my mom calls me Jess 90% of the time now.
It's funny, I always introduce myself as Jessie and think of that as being my name. But the reality is that everyone calls me Jess. I just never think to introduce myself as Jess.
I also answer to anything that remotely sounds like my name: Justin, Jason, Jerkface...
I'm a Katherine (is it obnoxious to say I love my first name? ), most people call me by my full name but many people call me Kat, which I like. When I was younger, some ppl tested out Kathy and Katie on me, I was not a fan.
Yes, my name can be shortened. And I HATE HATE HATE when I introduce myself and people automatically call me by half my name. Approximately 79% of people I meet get my name wrong. My family and close friends call me by my full name or my initials.
I had an ie on the end of my name as a NN until I was about 14, when I decided to drop it. But everyone who knew me growing up (friends, family, etc) still calls me that, and I answer to it without even thinking about it. I still call myself that when I'm home and it makes H insane when we're visiting my hometown. When I was getting to know H, I'd call and leave a message w/ his roommate, and they'd be like x-ie called, and he'd be all, "um, who? I know an x, but not an x-ie. I wonder if those are the same people?"
You can tell I'm really committed to my given name.
When I call Charlotte Charlie or Lottie (the former I will sing Hey There Charlie Girl, instead of Georgie) and she is quick to tell me that her name is Charlotte. lol
Lottie is very cute!
My name is Katherine but I've always been called Kate or Katie, which I prefer.

Thanks I have a feeling her little sister will end up calling her something easier and perhaps that is the nickname that will stick.

Yes, Emilie has lots of nickname potentials, and yes, many of my friends use them- Em, Emmie, Millie, Emma, etc. I like almost all of them. My parents have never called me a nickname, not ever.

Ditto with the Emily nicknames. I'm em to most people that know me well, ems to my sister, and emsumm to my mom.

I HATE the most common shortening of my name. HATE.
While I won't actually refuse to answer to it, I do try to make a point of correcting people, unless it just doesn't seem worth it at the time. I probably let it slide a lot more often than I should, but I try not to be bitchy about, just politely tell people that it's not a nickname I like.

yes and yes. Though I have the same name as my dad. He uses either his middle name or the shorten version of our name. So my friends use the short name, but family only use the long name.
