Name that series...

For the life of me I can't remember titles or the author. They're historical fiction, along the lines of John Jake. It follows a family dynasty through US History. I think some of the books (or maybe all) had state titles like Oregon or something. I read them when I was maybe in middle school or early high school but they're definitely adult fiction. Anyone have any ideas?
