Came home on Sunday, started having severe abdominal pain on Monday, admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. Official diagnosis is diverticulitis, caused by some infection I picked up over there. Fun times, let me tell you!
I'm not sure if they will let me out today - I still have a good amount of pain and I haven't yet been able to provide them with the all-important stool sample.
Two friends helped me out last night, retrieving my car and feeding the cats, etc. I'm trying to keep my mom from flying up mainly because my house is such a mess!
And damn, a hospital is no place to recover from a 48-hour trip home - they woke me up almost every hour for something or other.
They don't know what kind of infection it is because I haven't been able to give them a stool sample. I'm not sure why they haven't given me anything to move things along. It's a big university hospital so there presumably is someone familiar with travel illnesses.
I'm so sorry! I had the same thing happen a few years ago, but it was initially misdiagnosed as appendicitis and they took my appendix out about two hours after I showed up at the ER. Then they admitted me to the hospital and told me a couple days later that it wasn't really my appendix. Whoops! Like you, I had an intestinal infection and was told it was likely diverticulitis. I was in the hospital for a week on iv antibiotics and then sent home with oral antibiotics. And had to follow up with a colonoscopy, which was lots of fun. The colonoscopy actually showed that I don't have diverticulitis, so it was just some random infection.
