I read the blog of an old HS friend, and she recently had a "guest" blogger post her top 8 baby items and posted this almost $2,000 travel system (Orbit Baby). My immediate thought was, "Um, what? That seems insane." Am I the only one who thinks it's crazy to spend that much on a travel system? She responded to me saying I'd never have to buy another travel system again if I had multiple children, and I laughed because I'll never have to buy another travel system either with my $200 one. Am I the only one who thinks that's...unrealistic? I'm probably just cranky, but her entire post made me feel like I was doing my child a disservice by not owing a bunch of fancy expensive baby items. I mean to each their own, but wow.

Yes, that is ridiculous. Travel systems are ridiculous,if you ask me. I have a Graco one. We've used it a handful of times. It sits in the basement. My H asks when we can sell the big heap of plastic collecting dust b/c really that's all it is. The Snap n' Go is the best. I am thinking the guest blogger is impressed with name brands.
I don't know, after all the baby crap I bought, carseats, strollers, etc, It would probably add up to 2k. I imagine if you have the money to blow then it's not really that crazy. I didn't though. We also had to buy a crib and baby furniture and drop 2k at the hospital.
It's a cool thing for sure but not particularly necessary on any level. My kids are happy and healthy and never had an orbit. We did have a Bugaboo (gift) and it was great when they were little but I like my BOB the best.
Nope, I'm right there with ya. Although, I would love to have had a City Select when I had a newborn and a 1 year old. But, that's in the $500-600 range and not in the $2k range...
I've used my Graco one a ton when DD was a little baby. While it wasn't "OMG this thing is sweet!", it got the job done and I don't have any complaints. We haven't spent big money on strollers and carseats though.
No. You're not. It's like I pointed out yesterday, some people who are broke with kids are broke by choice because they "need" the best of the best for them.
If you want it and can afford it, fine. Everyone has their splurges. Just don't justify it as "The best" or "Necessary."
Rubes was almost 14 months before she got an outfit that wasn't a handmedown. Even now it's clearance rack stuff. She does have a Maxi Cosi carseat and a stroller which are supposed to be "high end" but I them all on super sale for as much as a Graco. I actually pack her Radioflyer up if we go to the mall or on an outing. It's easier, I have more storage space, and she sits better in it. Also a handmedown. I bought her crib for $120.00 on Overstock.
I cloth diaper but she gets Target brand diapers at daycare. I work in agriculture. Don't get me started on why we don't do organics.
I'd rather spend money on things that matter down the line. Her savings account, and outing..hell even a nice toy like a kitchen set she'll have awhile before I spend it on seasonal short term things.

I kind of think travel systems are a rip off anyway, one at that price especially. And I've heard that while the way the infant seat is set up is pretty cool, the stroller itself is really awkward and hard to open/collapse.

I hate those posts. I see it all the time, Bloggers do a favorite baby stuff post and it is all a bazillion dollars.
Bet you a the guest blogger doesn't own any of that expensive stuff. They just copy and paste all the prettiest stuff they find in the Internet.
I personally think the orbit system is ugly and clunky looking. I have a maxi cosi infant seat and the foray stroller and they are mid range $ wise but the bomb for functionality.
That's what I'd like to see in a guest blog, what's really worth it.
She has crazy first time mommy syndrome. Of course every parent wants only the best but realistically speaking, not many of us can afford $2,000 travel systems. I'm quite happy with my Graco travel system and the used jogging stroller I got for $50.
The chick that posted said she had 4 kids. LOL.
And I have a used jogging stroller I bought on CL for $50. It's awesome.
I have 2 sets of friends with orbit systems and they swear by it. But they can both afford it without sacrificing savinfs accounts and college funds etc. and to each her own.
I generally hate travel systems and was a huge fan of the maclaren version of the snap n go when the kids were babies. We bought a maclaren umbrella stroller for the post baby- bucket stage and it's been good to us (even under shocking abuse at the hands of my son) for 5 years now.

Oh for pete's sake! What is up with these parents who think they are denying their children a decent life if they don't spend a ton of money on expensive and unecessary crap that has no bearing whatsoever on how the child turns out? Pfft.
If/when DH and I have kids it would involve used and Target purchased clothing and cloth diapers. What? I won't spend $40 for a pair of Baby Gap skinny toddler jeans? Oh my, omebody hang me at the stake!!

Yeah, you're not the crazy one. Won't she want something that allows for multiple children in the future? I could have totally got by with the $150 Evenflo one we bought when DD was a baby if I didn't just want a stroller for both kids to sit in when fictional kid 2 arrives. In fact, I've thought about just carrying/wearing the baby and pushing DD around in her lightweight stroller until the baby can sit up in a regular stroller.
Anyway, I'm also a store-brand diapering, non-organic, used clothes (and used whatever I can find) mom. I think we're awesome!
Strollers are more about the people pushing them than the baby. I would spend serious money on something like a travel system if it was something that made my life easier and if it really was what would work best for me. Not $2000, but that system can be had for nearer half that price. Still crazy, but not if it is something that you use a lot and it will save you hassles.
I hated the snap n go type thing that my daughter had..it was too short for my H and I to use comfortably, and I was babysitting and taking my grandson places so I needed to be able to use it. It was heavy and clunky too. I finally bought my own carseat/stroller thing, but I could have saved my back with the swivel thing on the orbit baby. That alone would have been worth it to me.
I am totally a 'kids don't need top of line everything' person though. I am constantly puzzled by the excess that I see surrounding the things that people think are 'necessary' for babies and children to be happy and healthy.
Wow, I just keep thinking of that line from Knocked Up when Seth Rogan says there's a crib in the alley behind his house and they should just rub Purell on it and use it.

I'd say she posted that stuff because she was hoping the company would find out she did it and give her one of the Orbit travel systems for free for the good review.
I think they're ugly. a friend of mine has one and swears by it. the one thing I do like about it is the ability to swivel the seat (convenient for when you're sitting at a table when you go out to eat, easy to put it on the car seat base in your car and swivel it to rear face). I would never pay that much for a travel system, though. my sister got the City Mini GT and loves it. I've been looking at systems for myself for when we have a baby and I like the Britax B Agile system.
We have the Orbit (for 5 years since DD was born) and I love it, but it was no where near $2k. I guess if you include the additional two carseats we bought for my mom's car, maybe.

We had a Graco travel system when Monkey was a baby and it wasn't bad, but it was $200 not $2,000. But it was nice to have when we shopped so I had his huge ass diaper bag and my purse and any bags we got from stores under there. We got one of the infant seat frames for Baby W (because my travel system was destroyed by someone else) and it was $70. We have a Maclaren umbrella to use for when he outgrows the infant seat and I won't buy another stroller again. So that is bs.
I did wish I could get the City Mini when I was pregnant, but I'm also cheap/poor so I didn't.
