I was at the pharmacy last night dropping off a prescription. While I was asking the pharmacist some personal questions, two guys came up and stood right behind me. I made a wtf face at one of them, who was practically at my elbow, but that was too subtle. They continued to stand close while I had an awkward consultation with the pharmacist.
Later when I went to pick it up, a different man came up and leaned on the counter right next to me while waiting for his turn. The pharmacist went through all the personal information with me and pretended he wasn't there.
I told DH how uncomfortable I felt. He laughed and told me the story of his grad school advisor. DH was standing behind him in line at the pharmacy once. The pharmacist went to check on something, then came back and said loudly to the advisor, who's an elderly man, "No sir, your insurance does not cover viagra." Everyone within a 20 yard radius was like . That poor, poor man.
I hate this.. Anywhere?! Like arm distance please. I was checking out to buy a shirt and these girls were so close they might as well swipped my card for me. Why must they be so close?
I've elbowed people who stand right behind me. I'll go to turn around and bam, elbow to the arm, chest. etc. Not my fault you're right the fuck behind me.
At my pharmacy they have a gigantic sign that says "Line forms here for the privacy of our patients" and it's a good 10 feet away from the counter and the staff are really good about asking people to step back.
I wonder if it's a HIPPA violation for the pharmacists to discuss your medical matter within earshot of another customer?

When I was an intern at the pharmacy, our pharmacists were diligent about making sure that people stood away when they were addressing a patient. I really appreciate this about them.
I've not had problems at this place before, which usually had a different pharmacist, who's very good at maintaining privacy for the patient. Too bad they are not all like that, as H's story illustrates.
Yeah, the pharmacy I go to now has a big sign and a line you need to stand behind for privacy. It seems like a no brainer but a lot of pharmacies really wouldn't have the space to do this.
But I at least think your pharmacist should have told those ingrates to step back.

Ours too! When people creep up I tell them to back off.

Yes, in fact we aren't even allowed to be on our cell at my pharmacy for HIPAA reasons.
