I was a thumbsucker as a kid. No overbite. Admittedly, my dentist lectured my mom about it every time we went in, but there was nothing she could do - it's not exactly something easy to take away. However, if you had one as a kid, it may just be genetic. I don't know enough about how genetics affect the jaw and teeth, but it seems likely.
My son is a thumb sucker and I get lectured every visit. The last time I looked the dentist straight in the face and said "If you know how to get him to stop them tell me." He had no advice and now I don't get lectured any more. My son is almost 4 though and he is getting an open bite too. All the books I have read say to wait until they are around 5 to start preventing. So I am waiting a bit longer until we get really agressive with preventing it. We have tried just about everything but the nail polish and that just seems soo mean. So for now I just let him suck and somtimes try to gently remind him to stop. This rarely every works.
