I like my furniture but I love my cats more.  I have to keep telling myself this.

We had a couch for almost five years that the cats completely shredded with their claws.  Seriously, it went from family room furniture to an oversized scratching post within days.  Anyway, we finally replaced it with a microfiber couch 3-4 months ago.  Everything was going so well until this morning when I sat down and saw 3-4 large punctures in the middle cushion.  I kind of want to cry.

Man, that's tough. It's harder to get them to stop a bad habit once it's been already going on for so long. My cats would mostly scratch the outer corners of the sofa. So with the new sofa, we got the double sided tape from the pet store for the corners & that has alleviated that quite a bit. For the cushions, we found that keeping a blanket on the sofa when it's not in use helps. That way if they're scratching when you're not home, they're scratching the blanket & not the sofa.
