I would really like to take the crappy ceiling light out of DS's room and replace it with a fan/light. His room is terribly hot in the summer, and I think this improves the overall quality of the room for future value.

Not difficult. You either need to verify that the box in the ceiling is rated to support a ceiling fan or install a support kit, which is like an extra $20. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same as installing a standard ceiling light, only with blades.

Agreed. But if you want to wire the light and fan blades to both be able to be turned on by switches, that's a bigger project. If you are going to have the fan blades turn on with a pull-cord, it's not too bad.
We hired our ceiling fans out, but that was only because there were no ceiling fixtures/wiring at all in the bedrooms, so everything had to be done brand new. The light switch previously went to an outlet.

What Mrs. jacinthe said!
Also make sure the circuit breaker is off to the light.
I enjoy it more when someone is there to be able to hand me things such as screws that I drop or the screwdriver. DS (who is 4) was able to do this when I installed one in his room.
I am sure you could find how to videos about it on youtube!
The rooms currently have recessed (is that the right word?) lights in the ceiling, so I imagine that the wires are there already. I am fine with it being a pullcord fan and switch light.
Guess this goes onto DH's to-do list for next weekend!!
