Our FRO just started a FB group for the squadron. She, along with several volunteers, will be posting on the page about upcoming events, and other information while the squadron is deployed.
I suggested we do a weekly/bi-weekly "roll call" to see how everyone is doing. She loved the idea and will be starting it soon. I also suggested we do a recipe swap and book club type thing to get everyone involved, regardless of where they may be. (I know that a lot of spouses will not be in CA during the deployment. Also, there are several parents and significant others in the group as well.)
She liked those ideas as well, and would like for me to be in charge of them since I suggested them. I don't mind running these activities, but I'd hate to bring up something that no one would want to participate in. So, I'm coming to y'all for some help. Which activity would you participate in?
Also, if you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears! Thanks for your help ladies!
In the unit H is in the FRG has tons of social groups. I actually like them (well the ones I am involved in). I would just do an informal poll of the group if you can to see if people would like either of these things. People can also decide not to participate in book club that month if they don't like the book.

I do plan on asking the group. I just figured I'd ask here first and see what y'all thought.

I think that those are both great ideas for inclusive activities that anyone can participate in but I had to vote honestly and say that I probably would not personally participate in either.
I wish my FRG would just offer dinner and a movie night. Something that lined up with the deployment child care stuff so I could drop my kid off and have conversation over dinner and see a movie out once in a while. I mean, I have no problem going by myself, but it's nice to go with a group of others sometimes.
But anyway, I'd skip book club for the same reasons Panicked mentioned. I might attend a recipe swap, but it's a long shot. I like cooking, but I'm just getting into it. I still see it as a chore that has to be done. I'd rather do something mindless and fun. That's just me though.

They have a lot of activites planned (both w/kids and w/out kids) for those that are on/near base. What I'm trying to do is help those that aren't near the base feel included.
I definitely understand not wanting to participate in the book club due to different reading styles. That's the one thing that still has me kind of iffy on the book club idea. But I haven't come up with anything else that everyone can participate in.

I voted yes to the recipe swap, I love those. I voted no to book club because I can be picky about what I read and I don't like having to follow a schedule with my reading. With a deployed husband and kids sometimes it's hard to keep up. I think they are great ideas though.

I voted neither, but it really depends.
I think I would rarely do a recipe swap b/c most people's recipes suck. They're unhealthy and meat-centric and cream of crap style.
It's exactly how I feel about a book club. I feel that most people ready shitty books of the Oprah book club variety.
However, if I knew the book choices ahead of time, I might join if I liked the selections. And I would join a recipe swap of people who cook similarly to me.
