We just booked the flights for 4 days and 3 nights in NYC right before NYE (we fly home the 31 Dec) so we obviously will miss the ball dropping. What should I be looking to do in NYC during the wintertime? Any great ideas? I've never been and neither has H.
It sounds super cliche, but see the Rockefeller Center tree. It's beautiful down there. And the toy store. We were there by accident last year on our way to somewhere else, and it was a lot of fun to be typical tourists. Plus, there's fairly good crowd control.
How fun! As your trip approaches, feel free to ask me anything, I'm looking forward to helping you plan!
NYC is so charming during Christmas time... some of the things I can think of right now are: - Radio City Christmas Spectacular - The window displays at Saks and Macy's - the tree just like clickerish mentioned - the star show inside Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle - ice skating in Central Park
As for all year round attractions: - Times Square (and seeing a Broadway show) - Museum Mile (5th Ave from 86th to 103rd) - a night at the Met Opera - South Street Seaport - View from the Top of the Rock - Statue of Liberty - romantic cruise around Manhattan with dinner - Empire State Building - Double Decker Bus Tour (might be too cold, though) - Brooklyn Bridge - Bleeker Street and the village etc etc ect.
You can also go ice skating in Bryant park, it's usually less crowded than Central park.
NYC around christmas is beautiful (though I think NYC is beautiful the rest of the time as well). However it gets extremely crowded around christmas so be prepared to be pushed around. When I lived in NYC I used to hate the christmas crowd.
Oh yeah the villages are so cue! Although they usually wrap up on the 24th so they might no be around anymore when you get here... Hopefully they'll change their plans this year!
I'm a nerd, but the New York Public Library does free tours. The building is beautiful and at least worth a walk around.
And, as jewels mentioned, a night at the Met Opera is incredible. We bought standing tickets at the door and it was still an amazing experience. We saw Turandot.
