My DD is 11 mos. the grandparents have started to ask what to get her for her bday. We have a family zoo membership and I suggested a membership to the Children's Science museum, but my mom doesn't think it is age appropriate and doesn't want to get her that. They also do not want to contribute to her college savings as they "want to be able to see her enjoy her gifts". We have a fairly small house and I don't know where we would put a lot if big stuff. My mom wants to spend about $200. Any suggestions? PIP appreciated. TIA.

She is probably still too little for this but what about a Leap Pad? It is small and with the amount of games they have available she can use it for quite some time.
Do you have a backyard? A climber or play structure for the backyard would be cool.
I second something for the backyard provided you have the space. If not would she compromise and give one toy that she can see your DD enjoy and then contribute the rest to her college savings?

Does it have to be a toy? What about clothes/shoes or bed/bedding? A convertible carseat? I know those are super practical and some people wouldn't consider them appropriate (or at least fun) "gifts", but since she'll need those things.....
If she's not opposed to Craigslist shopping, that's a great place to find barely used little tikes climbing toys. They hold up forever and the kids are only going to use them for a few years, so I definitely think they're a great thing to buy used.
DS's favorite first birthday gifts were: Leapfrog scout (also comes as Violet as a more girly version) Little people farm and zoo playsets. He's 3 and still plays with them occasionally.

Does it have to be tangible? What about asking for some music, language, or movement classes? There are LOTS of great classes offered. I'd sign DD up for a lot more if they weren't so $$.

This is a great idea. I will suggest some music classes, but she may still want something tangible. I would like to have options.
