Yes, you can gate check both. I highly recommend the red gate check bags available at bru or on amazon. They keep the stuff clean and the attendants have a super easy time spotting the red bags when u are waiting for them.
I wouldn't worry about flying with him. Until they are mobile, babies are pretty easy on planes. Well mostly. I tried to plan our flights around his naps, and made sure to give him a bottle at takeoff and landing. I had MPT in the stroller to the gate, then wore him as we boarded. that seemed to work just fine.

How far are you flying? Do you have a layover
Yeah, he'll be five months. We're just going to OC, so only a 2 hour flight.
I haven't flown with DD yet but have a trip coming up soon. I'm curious as to how traveling will work, too.
A girlfriend of mine who travels a lot with her 2 y/o recommended a portable baby tent. All the big box baby stores sell them online. I'm thinking of getting one before our trips this summer to see friends and family so nobody has to worry about where she's able to sleep.
DS is almost 11 months old now and we've flown with him almost every month since he was 3 months old. You can gate check both the stroller and the carseat and I highly recommend buying a bag for the carseat. The airlines run out of the large plastic bags often. Also, I carry DS in the Ergo since it frees up both of my minds. It is especially useful when going through security.
As far as a travel bed goes, we use the Kidco one which is basically a tent with an inflatable mattress for babies. It is easy to set up and take down and it's only 6 pounds.
Like pp mentioned, I don't think babies are difficult to travel with until they are mobile. DS was a perfect angel on all flights until the last one two weeks ago. He just started walking so he was pretty pissed at us for not letting him loose on the plane. Oh man, we saw a preview of toddler tantrums that made us both want to die on the spot.

IMO, that's a great age to travel. I flew w/ DD when she was 6m, and she was portable and wasn't on enough of a routine that catching up on sleep was a problem. She would just fall asleep when she got tired. Feeding during takeoff and landing also helps their ears.

I just flew last month with my then 6 month old and she did great. She slept on all of the flights.
I didn't take a carseat, but I gate checked my stroller with no problems. I was too cheap to buy a bag for the stroller to protect it, so I put it in a travel hanging bag. It was great; it kept the stroller clean, and it is quilted (a very old Vera Bradley) so nothing got scratched or dinged. I popped the back wheels off (city mini gt), and just had them floating around, and I could fit my boppy in there too.

We haven't flown anywhere with Abby, but we forgot the Sleep Sheep (white noise machine) the first time we went to my parents. In case you need one, there is a pretty decent free iPhone app for that.
I loved traveling with him around that age. So easy. I never took the stroller until he was walking and to heavy to haul around in the sling. The less stuff the better. I've also rented infant carseats and now keep a spare convertible at my parents.
Definitely nurse, feed or pacifier on take off or landing. I don't know if you cloth diaper, but I take about 2-3 diapers and then a few disposables hidden at the bottom of the bag in case of extra delays.
I'd check the carseat with your bags (usually free) so you don't have to haul it through the airport. Plus you can load the bag with extra baby stuff for free.

I carried DS in the ergo and used the stroller to push the luggage, which I suggest doing. I always regular bag checked the carseat since I knew I'd be holding him.
As for travel bed, I had a pnp delivered to my mom's house since I knew we'd be visiting a lot, but have also just made a bed on the floor for quick overnights. DS always ended up in our bed anyway.

Okay, going to put on my carseat nerd hat and I apologize in advance. It's really not safe for the baby to ride on a plane not in their carseat. On a plane even decks of cards and pens have to be secured down per FAA regulations. Adults and anyone over 2 needs to be properly buckled. Why would you let the most vulnerable infants ride unbuckled?
Also, airlines tend to damage carseats. Sometimes it's obvious and visible and you're stuck at your destination without a seat. Sometimes it doesn't become apparent until the seat fails in an accident and the kid gets hurt. Gate checking is a little better because there are fewer people handling it, but I've seen video of baggage handlers throwing carseats on the tarmac *hard* and pieces falling of the carseat as a result.
Okay, now to return to regularly scheduled non-nesting and shut up about being a paranoid freak!
