((hugs)) You are a stronger woman than I am (obviously, since we have two almost 3-y.o.s who sleep in our bed from ~midnight-on and who go to sleep holding our hands). I know how infuriating the floor creaking thing can be-- it's actually one of the reasons we moved rather than trying to renovate/add on to our old house.
ETA: Sorry, just read that over and I think it sounded insensitive. I was just trying to say I feel for you. I hope it starts going better soon.
We did the CIO for bedtime around 2y with Gray. I thought L was going to lose her mind, but thankfully it worked. Like TWB/N2A we also had a nightly visitor in our bed, but thankfully we waited so long, we didn't have to cry it out then, just do a sticker chart.
These are the things they don't tell you when you are planning on having children.
The difference is that those people abandoned them. You're doing your damnedest to help them, even though it hurts to hear them cry. They know the difference.
For ours comforting them is just distracting and pushes actual sleep back further and further. It will get better if you stick with it. We've gone from 2+ hours of crying every night (even while holding, rocking, etc.) to most nights of 5 minutes or less, sometimes just right to sleep. About every two weeks we'll have a bad night with lots of crying, but that grin is always there to greet me in the morning.
