We have a roller blind (which makes it darkish but not DARK). I really like the twilight turtle and will use it as a lamp next time. I just used a nightlight this time (left it on all night).
We decided to not do blackout shades, because I didn't want it to have to be dark for my daughter to sleep. She sleeps late so the morning sun doesn't seem to bother her, but she is a terrible napper. Idon'I know if blackout shades would have made a difference.
I have blackout rolldown shades and they were totally worth it. Then MIL sewed me some cute curtains from fabric I bought (for both boys' rooms). I bought a cute cheap lamp from ikea that is actually kind of dim - great for middle of the night feedings. It looks like it's from the 50's and I dig the style.
I am hoping that she won't need it to be 100% dark to sleep so I'm not going to use a blackout shade. There are blinds on the window, which will stay (with the safety cord thing), and I bought double-lined curtains. I can close the curtains if necessary and it will be pretty dark.
Our kids are early risers, so we need blackout shades for both of then (once we moved DS2 from our room, with no blackout shades, to his room which had them, he slept MUCH better from 4:30 AM on..). I also have curtains over them, just for the aesthetics. Curtains and table lamp are both from Land of Nod. At night we just use a basic nightlight.
I got a blackout roller shade custom cut at home depot. It's just cheesy vinyl but it works great and it took them like two minutes to cut it. Jc penney has nicer, cheaper options if you are willing to order something and wait. I couldn't find curtains I liked, so I just got a valance at target and it looks really cute.
DD's room had a ceiling light, so we replaced it with a ceiling fan with a light. I also got a table lamp at homegoods, which comes in really handy when I just need a little light to read her a story or change her diaper. For lighting when she is asleep, we use the light on her humidifier and the projector on her sound spa.
that side of the house doesn't get much light. We just got new cordless blinds and then I am having curtains made. They will have a regular liner, if we find we need a blackout we will just sew/iron on a blackout liner to the curtains.
we installed a ceiling light in the center of the room and will have a lamp on the table by the glider

We live in AK, so blackout shades become a necessity from May through September if 1, I want DS (2 years old) to go to sleep before midnight, and, 2, I want him to sleep past 5 am. I don't use them during naptime, though - just blinds. I want him to be able to distinguish the difference. Our baby is due in August, so I won't worry too much about the light in their room until next summer rolls around.
We have a table lamp in DS's room that we use at bedtime; it's less "harsh" than the overhead light for reading books before bedtime. We have a nightlight in there that has a sensor and turns on when it's dark and stays off during the day. It gives enough light for us to be able to see when we go in and he needs his blankets readjusted, and provides just enough light for him to see if he wakes up, but not so much light that he thinks it's time to play.

I sewed DS2's curtains myself and put blackout material behind the fabric. I also don't want him to get dependent on total darkness so I keep the curtains open by about 6 inches in the middle, so it's dim but not totally dark.
Making the curtains was very easy and you could probably use fabric glue if you didnt have a machine. I just turned right sides together, sewed around the edges, turned everything right side out again and used those clippy rings to hang them on the curtain rod.

I never needed blackout curtains, but I know others who swear by them. DD hasn't had a problem sleeping in past sunrise. She had blinds and a valance that matched her bedding. There is a cute lamp that matches DD's bedding I wanted, but I never got it. I was worried about her knocking it over.

we bought cordless blackout shades from BBB that are also insulating. We got white because we really wanted them for the decor / insulating / privacy value over the 'blackout' value. They do the job quite nicely.
We skipped black out curtains because I didn't want him to get used to having to fall asleep in a pitch black room. This worked well for us. I ordered regular curtains at baby bedding.com and I highly recommend them.
