“Life is not orderly. No matter how we try to make it so, right in the middle of it lose a leg, fall in love, drop a jar of applesauce.” - Natalie Goldberg
Related story - when I first moved in with H (then bf) he was working nights and slept during the day. I didn't have a job yet so I was always home. One day, two "maintenance men" knocked on the door. They said the apartment below was complaining of a leak from our porch to theirs (the porches were cement) and they needed to check it out. They were scary looking, didn't have uniforms on (like the other guys I had seen), and I was hesitant. They assured me they wouldn't be long so I let them in. They went out to the porch. I just got a weird feeling. H was home, but asleep. I grabbed my dog, went into the kitchen, and grabbed a knife (omg, I know). They were outside maybe 10 minutes, then left. I didn't walk them out, I just stood there in the kitchen, holding my dog. I locked the door as soon as they left. I checked the porch, they had done nothing, didn't even have tools with them. They never came back. A few days later, I asked our neighbor underneath if the leaking had stopped and she had no idea what I was talking about. Yeah, those guys were not maintenance men for our apartments. I am such an idiot and never should have let them in. It scares me to think what could have happened.

POPPY! ACK! This freaks me out.
OP, like poppy, trust your gut. But next time don't let the guy in.

I know! I still get anxious when I think about it. Always trust your instincts, people!

Poppy, something similar happened to me recently. Some guy knocked on the door then proceeded to let himself in (I was dumb and hadn't locked the front door after checking the mail) before I could get there and said he was there to fix our fully functional sink. He had a key and everything, said he found it out back where my "room mate" left it (I don't have a room mate). I was freaked out and never let him past the threshold. Later I tried the key he had and it didn't fit our door, I don't know why he had it.
Anyway, I spend a few days a week home alone with no car out front and it still really freaks me out. I am much better at locking the door now though.

I worked at an apartment complex and came home to my roommate and her mom saying the maintenance guy came in to fix her toilet and asked if I had put in the order because she didn't think anything was wrong with it. We walked into the bathroom and this guy basically flooded the bathroom, was drunk off his ass (or high, who knows) and was definitely not part of our maintenance crew. I called the cops and the manager. The guy booked it once he realized he was caught. They ended up catching him walking around the complex telling people he was maintenance.
