I do these. You get a gift card as payment. Usually it's through a company whose name you can google . I'd only worry about if they're reputable if nothing comes up in a search.
Iv'e participated in several medical research studies but I've always done the contacting. Huh. It's probably different because its medical vs non med. IDK. I'm no help.
The company I'm signed up with pays cash for them. I've only participated in one. But got picked for 2 more (but through other companies) and was dismissed before it started. But still paid. They oftentimes overbook, in case people don't show up. But will still pay you for coming.
I got picked for one Red Robin did a few months ago. They had too many people show up and asked for a volunteer to leave. I said I'd go, knowing I'd still get my $50 gift card. And I did.

If you can verify that it's legit, do it! I've done a few focus groups through a market research company. Totally worth the money. I did one for Shutterfly where I made a photo book at home (they paid for it). Then, I met with a group of people and we talked about what we liked and hated about Shutterfly. I think it paid $150, plus the free photo book.
I'm in the twin registry through a state university. I got paid $100 in exchange for my saliva and filling out a survey. They send me birthday cards and free pens too. They contacted myself & my twin sister when we were seniors in high school I think. Since we're both relatively healthy we're not of much interest to them so we aren't involved in the bulk of their research studies.
