The next car we get will be a Prius or other hybrid.
But it will be awhile before we buy any cars. One of ours is paid off and the other is almost paid off. I'd like to hang onto them both for a good while before jumping back into car payments again.
i love my highlander. i get 20-23 miles to the gallon, usually. i do mostly highway driving, but lots of speeding and passing which negates any gas mileage benefits.
h previously had a camry, which was also a great car. very comfortable ride.

For myself? A Dodge Dart (hellooo 40+ mpg highway!), Subaru Outback (awesome safety review- my cousin rolled down the side of a mountain in one of these and walked away with only a few scratches!), orrrrr the new Volkswagen Beetle Coupe (just because they look so dang cute and fun!).
As far as bigger cars go, I have a Jeep and I love it. I've had three, and they have all been pretty indestructible. They just keep going and going and going.
To answer the question, though, if I were getting a new car I would get a Fiat or a Ford Fiesta. My next car will be one of those two options. That's just personal choice, though.
I have a 2011 vw sportwagon tdi- it's a fantastic car. Its got a badass Sunroof (that extends past the back seat)! I got all of the available upgrades and paid $29k I get 45 mpg hwy and only have to change the oil every 10k, which is free through my 30k checkup! It's as fast as my Audi a4 ever was and had tons of cargo space and is a very safe option as well. This is my second tdi (turbo diesel)- they are great.
Ditto a Highlander 2nd choice would probably be a gently used Venza
Another Highlander lover here. It's hard to find a used one with low miles though. We were lucky and found one that was (at the time - it's a 2008 and we got it two years ago) 3 years old and with 30k miles on it. Only upgrade is heated leather seats and it was $22.9, I think. I really love it. It wasn't quite ready when we purchased it and traded in our minivan, so they gave us a Venza to drive and I fell in love with that, too. I'd definitely look into those if we were car-shopping right now.
We got a used 2011 Altima last year and like that, too.
