We have some prints that are matted but frameless. They are unusual sizes and though relatively small, we can't find cheap(ish) frames for them. We also have an unmatted 11x14 print we'd like to frame. Normally I'd just use Ikea frames but they are in even odder sizes, both the frame itself and the "mat".
Any suggestions for nice looking but cheap "custom" frames for the matted prints? Or a frame with mat for the loose print? We like the prints a lot and are eager to hang them but don't want to spend more on the frame than we paid for the prints.
I would remat too. Hobby Lobby is usually pretty inexpensive to get custom matting done if you go at the right time. We had some cut for some of H's sports memorabilia and we paid like $4/mat. I can't remember if we waited when they had the 40% off coupon or if there was an actual sale on custom mats.
I would NOT go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby for custom frames though. They price insanely. If you can find a little framing shop or art gallery, ask them for quotes. Even small frames, they'll be cheaper. (I had 2 full sized flags framed at a local shop for less than what Michael's quoted me for one.)
The simplest (and probably least expensive) thing would be to find frames nearest in size to your matted prints and trim your mats to fit the frame.
I've done it before. I just played around with the glass over the mat to get the position right, since it would not necessarily be even on all sides, traced around the glass and trimmed the mat with a utility blade.
