I actually thought they hinted at that in the finale when she was talking with the other scheming maid about how she wished she was with a family that traveled more.

O'Brien brings a lot to the table but I don't think her loss will be felt as strongly as some of the others this past season. Another troublemaker will emerge to challenge Thomas.
I hope they give a good reason, even though they hinted in the Christmas episode. At least they said they left the door open for her, so it doesn't look like they kill her off.

I think they are just saying she found another job.
I never cared for the character so I am happy about this.
I didn't care much for that character, but think it'll be easy for them to write her off since they hinted that may happen during the Christmas episode.
I'm kind of unsure of where I stand w/ O'Brien. both she and Thomas are horrid, but at least w/ him - there is something there that I can grasp onto. Part of it is that at times his character is just funny. But also because either the way it's played or written - there is something human there that feels real.
Outside of the little, tiny glimpse that you got from O'Brien that she felt bad about causing Cora's miscarriage - she is just this grumpy grump that I just can't "feel" anything for.
Not sure yet if I"ll miss her when she's gone or not!

This is interesting to me. There's so few episodes, I wonder what she could be leaving to do that couldn't work around the shooting schedule of Downton. For an actress her age, it seems like the meaty role of a lifetime, and the character is so pivotal to the show. I understood Dan Stevens's decision more, I can see him wanting to make a name in Hollywood or live theatre, but O'Brien is not going to be in the same boat.
Random, but a big thumbs up to Dan Stevens's new look (minus the poor excuse for facial hair):
