H really wanted a 2 car garage. He does all our car maintenance and he likes to do it at night with a light and a radio and not disturd the neighbors. And we have 2 dogs so I wanted a fenced yard I can put them in and a neighborhood where I feel completely safe walking them alone at night. They aren't exactly guard dogs. We weren't thinking long term when we bought because H is hoping to get transferred in the next few years so I wasn't concerned with schools at the time. What ultimately sold us on our house after it matched our requirements was we went and stood in the front yard to talk about it, mid afternoon, and I could hear birds chirping and see squirrels playing and it felt peaceful and comfortable.

I agree with location, it was our number 1 priority when we were looking for a home. My H also really wanted a garage so he could turn it into a workout area/small gym (which he has done). We settled on other aspects of the house in order to buy a house we could afford in our desired location (South Tampa).
Our 1st priority was getting the most for our money. Even with the crappy real estate market, houses are soooo expensive up here. Most of the single family homes in the location we wanted either required a TON of work or were out of our price range. We decided a townhouse would be best for our current situation. It only needed cosmetic updates & was bigger than most of the single family homes we could afford. We are starting to think about selling... Maybe next year. We have built enough equitity already to be able to get a nice, single family.
We look at location and schools. We are looking to move in a year and my H wants a 2 car garage and a detached garage. DD wants to make sure we still have a pool.
