..a different camera for our cruise? I have a somewhat expensive compact SLR and I dunno if I wanna take it with me or just get a small, point and shoot camera? Ideas? Opinions?
How's the camera on your phone? Really, I'd avoid buying another camera...phone cameras are getting better and better and it'd probably just end up being a waste of money, especially if you have the SLR already.

I don't see the point in having a nice camera that works if you become afraid to take it anywhere.
Then it's just collecting dust. On the off chance something does happen to it.. you get a new one. Get a new cheap one if you want.. after something happens to the current one.
It's so so. I was going to buy a fancy underwater camera (since we were going on an excursion) but since H just wants to stay on the boat, I'm not going to mess with an underwater camera (I wanted pictures of neat fishes! ). I would end up using it for our trips mostly and the SLR for stuff closer to home. I just don't know how comfortable I am taking a $700+ camera and two lenses that are $300 on a cruise :\
We brought both my H's expensive camera and my point and shoot camera on both cruises we went on. His ended up being left in the room more often than not because he didn't want to lug it around and didn't want to take it off the boat in some of the places we went to. (Especially when we were doing an excursion, because he didn't want to leave it hanging out on the beach or whatever.) We were never really worried about it being stolen and such, it was just cumbersome to carry around, versus mine fitting neatly into my purse.
I will say I ended up needing a bigger memory card, because I burned through my small one, rather quickly.
H and I are bad about not getting pictures of us together on trips so I dunno lol. he said it was up to me if I wanna take my camera or not. I wanna shake him

If it isn't too bulky or heavy, I would just take the nice one you have already.
If you want something smaller and more compact, and you know you will get enough use out if it in the future, then get a small point & shoot (they have many inexensive ones that are OK on quality). I wouldn't spend the money unless you get more use out of it than just this cruise, though.
I took my really good camera to Alaska and Hawaii. We did lots of excursions and I wanted really good quality pics.
If you are just planning to stay on the boat I would get something smaller and compact. I have a Sony cybershot that's 14.1 mega-pixel and it was just over $100 2 years ago. It fits perfectly in my back pocket.

This. It reminds me of my grandma being afraid to wear her good jewelry because she thought she would lose it or someone would steal it. I would be a shame but what is the point of spending money on something that is going get locked up and never uses.

I would just take the one you have, especially since it's a nice camera and you'll get better pics.
I took our big SLR backpacking through Europe for our 4-week trip in April and we even stayed in hostels. I had it on me almost at all times and locked it up when needed. It was fine.
Also, are you worried about dropping it? Do you have a padded bag of some sort? I got a nice one right before our trip that looks like a purse and it was worth it.

I'll trade you my point and shoot for your SLR!
If your worry is lugging it around, you might get a smaller camera. I keep mine in my purse at all times.
If your worry is dropping it, get a good neck strap and a good case for it.
If your worry is somebody stealing it, make sure it's secured to your body (neck strap, across-the-body shoulder strap) and don't let go of it unless you're in your room.
My good friend went to Italy last summer, left her GOOD camera in a taxi. Get a cheap one.
I don't understand because this can happen anywhere, including misplacing it in your own city or even at home.
Like Ala said, I feel like it defeats the purpose of having a nice camera if you're not going to use it, especially on vacation when you're likely to take the most photos.
