Thanks for the great ideas and advice, everyone! The party went well (though I drew the short straw on showers and was unshowered, braless, and barefoot when our pastor and the first group of guests showed up-- lovely). Everyone seemed to have a good time, and we didn't have any kid meltdowns even though we ran right through their naptime, so I call that a win!
I was pretty happy with how the cake turned out. I recreated a scene they've been watching from their windows at daycare, which was a huge dirt pile being removed by an excavator and dump truck. I don't know if they really got the similarity, but they seemed to like the cake regardless.
Here's the cake. I made the big pile out of rice krispy treats, which I frosted and then decorated with the "dirt" (made from crushed up generic honey grahams and chocolate rice krispy-type cereals).
Another pic with the orange cones we used for decoration (and, hiding behind the cups, a construction rubber duckie):
Of course the first thing they did was to run the trucks all over the cake and then use the scoop parts of the trucks to eat the dirt off the top of the hill (lol!):
We also attended our (well, my) first kid party this past weekend, and I am way less intimidated now. I think I could pull one off.
