I went to Wal-Mart (just across the street) and to the grocery store (about .4 miles away) but I was gone for like an hour.
And like a dummy, instead of calling my H and saying "can you come check the house?" and wait for him in the car, I barreled right into the house to see if there were people inside packing our valuables up. Safe to say no one was in the house. Even the cat was like "OMG LADY WHAT ARE YOU DOING RUNNING INTO THE HOUSE LIKE THAT?!" as she jumped up on the couch.
I am considering giving my garage door opener back to H when he gets home from work. I called him and told him I just went running in and I could hear the "WTF LADY" in his voice when he asked if I was insane lol. Hey, I left the kid in the car!
lol..I've done this a lot before. We also had neighbors once that must have gone out of town. Their garage door was open for the entire day. Finally the next day we realized they must be gone and closed it for them. We live in a super safe neighborhood though so nothing was taken.

I used to live across the street from people who maybe had their garage door shut 1 out of every 4 days. And nights. They were hoarders, so it's not like anyone could get in or anything (at least not without moving a whole freaking lot of stuff) but there were plenty of things in their garage worth stealing, including a genuine vintage arco lamp.
I've left my garage door open during the day (and night) many times. Honestly I never think much of it. Our garage is detached kind of set back behind the house. I have a lot of neighbors who stay home (retirees, SAHM's) so they'd notice and say something if someone started walking off with our stuff (junk?).
I'm always afraid I forgot to shut the garage door. DH is usually out driving around for work, so if I can't go back to check myself I'll send him a text asking him to drive by. But one of his coworkers made fun of me about that this weekend. Glad to know he shares my texts to make fun of me...
We are super anal about keeping the house locked up (although I'm sure that will change after we've lived there a few years) even though we live in the middle of a cow field, surrounded by retirees, with an old man across the street that admittedly spends his day "guarding" my house and the neighbors house.
Before I went on vacation I had to let him know that my mom would be coming by to feed my cat and not to be worried. He's great and he thinks its his duty to make sure nothing happens.

I am usually very careful about it (except not too terribly long ago I left the front DOOR wide open too) but I wash rushing around to get my errands run so I could a) feed the cat because she apparently couldn't chew the sliced food as well as the regular mush I bought before and b) get back home before it was hotter than hades out and it went right out of my mind.
And then, I discovered the muffler on my car is loose at the end, so it makes a clunking noise. I told H it was a good thing we were eating leftovers tonight because I could probably poison every one at the rate I'm going.
