Our house is currently builder's beige throughout. Literally. It was a foreclosure that was "neutralized" and I am over the blah color.
Our dining room gets a LOT of sun (faces south). It has white wainscoting, light tan carpet, and a huge set of windows. We have a cherry hutch and table/chairs. I know a picture would help and I'll try to take one later when the sun comes up.
I am seriously considering an eggplant color for the walls. DH didn't baulk at the idea (shocking), but I am nervous about such a drastic color change. My furniture is much more traditional, but here is an inspiration picture I found:
So, do I dare???
UPDATE: Here are a couple of photos of the room (ignore the sewing planning station currently on the dining room table--it's tracing day!) The samples look a little washed out in this photo--it is hard to balance light in that room with the windows. DH like the top color. I would like to go a little darker, but am not sure...decisions decisions!
DH is at Home Depot and I texted him to pick up a chip of that paint color Dr. L. I think I want a little more plum than gray tone to it since I have the cherry wood. In my mind, I know it is just paint, but painting over a dark color is such a PITA....and I might be a bit of a perfectionist who hates to make mistakes.
So far, LA's room and her playroom have been painted. Playroom took three freakin coats (one was my fault--wrong color choice--and then two coats of the final color). We are painting over what must be the cheapest paint made.
We are going to eventually hire the main living areas out because our foyer and family room are all two stories and I have no desire to rent equipment and risk life and limb to paint it.
Once I pick out bedding (or make some) for our master, it is up next.
I hear ya on hiring out. The previous owners painted our upstairs and downstairs hallways lemon yellow We had a guy come in to do the downstairs hallway and the stairwell. Yes, the stairwell was yellow. As soon as SW has another 40% off sale, we're bringing him back to paint the stairwell in our addition. I'll take care of the rest

I think you should do it! I would never have considered purple on the walls but I love the inspiration picture you posted - and I think it would look really nice in your space.
I like "color I am leaning towards" best in that light. Dr L's reads a little too purple, the second one down seems a little too dark, and the third one is too lavendar. But, different times of day can make such a big difference, too.
Painting is such a cheap way to make a big change!

I agree with all of this.. the 3rd one looks like a nursery/playroom color to me.
could you do larger samples of your current fav & one shade darker? (is that what #2 is?) I would take pictures at different times of day/night to compare & see if your favorite changes or not.
