I work at a very very old school and there is cool crap just about everywhere. Today I got the okay to take this home with me:
It's an old wood door. I freakin' love it, but I'm not sure what to do with it yet. Originally I was thinking of making it a headboard for the guest room, but would that look uncomfortable? I'm also worried because it's heavy as hell and I want to make sure it doesn't damage the wall.
Also, how to I clean it/get the critters off of it? I left it in the garage, but I think a tiny spider is on the loose in my car now. Can I use my pressure cleaner?
Cool! I would pressure wash it off (but gently) and then make sure it dries out good, preferably outside in the sun. I've done that before on old, old fenceposts and the like without issue.
Otherwise, if you're scared. Get a wire brush and dry scrub it that way.
I would do a desk out of it. Sturdy and cool.
A head board would be fun, but I don't know if drywall even with good anchors is trustworthy enough. Make sure you a couple good studs if nothing else.
Thanks Dairy! I would love to do a desk - we actually really need one. I don't know if it would be functional though - the door isn't flat (those square shapes are five recessed panels). It could be a really cool console table though, since I could just pile books and things on it.
I think if I made it a headboard I'd have to support it from the floor as well by nailing some wood legs on the back of it. It's just insanely heavy. H wasn't home from work when I brought it in and I looked RIDICULOUS getting that thing out of the car. I was sort of "walking" it up the driveway by swinging it from corner to corner. It looked like I was dancing with it.

You could still make it a desk, just have a piece of heavy glass cut to fit on the top!
I like that one too! Very cool and a great example of character mixed with function. I wish our foyer was laid out differently. As it is, it's hard to put any kind of table/chair (anything really) in there without it being in the way of a doorway or the stairs. I think I'm going to have to find a few small tables to put in there, or just go with shelves.
I'm looking at this though and wondering, would it be a crime to cut the door to make it a smaller surface?
I'm definitely considering it, but it would be better if the panels were running vertically instead of horizontally. My carpentry skills are non existent at this point, so I'm not sure if there would be any issues with sawing wood that old down the middle.
Two of those shelves would just make my family room sing! I'm going to the habitat for humanity ReStore today and I'm going to see if they have any folding ones. Honestly I'm way behind on projects right now, so I have some time to ponder it.
